Medicine Bow-Routt/South Brush Creek
Overview
Located within the majestic Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest, South Brush Creek Campground offers a quintessential high-altitude Wyoming experience. This facility provides a peaceful retreat for travelers seeking a deep connection with nature along the famous Snowy Range Scenic Byway. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service, it serves as a rustic gateway to the rugged beauty of the Medicine Bow Mountains, where the scent of pine and the sound of rushing water define the daily atmosphere. It is an ideal spot for those who prefer the sounds of the forest over the hum of a highway.
Location & Surroundings
The campground is situated approximately 20 miles southeast of Saratoga, Wyoming, tucked away in a lush canyon setting. The South Brush Creek flows directly adjacent to the camping area, providing a serene backdrop and cooling influence during the summer months. Surrounded by dense stands of lodgepole pine and aspen trees, the location offers ample shade and privacy between sites. At an elevation of over 8,000 feet, the air is crisp, and the surrounding terrain features dramatic rocky outcrops and expansive alpine meadows typical of the Medicine Bow National Forest.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional forest service site, South Brush Creek prioritizes a primitive camping experience for visitors. The campground features vault toilets and drinking water available via a hand pump, though there are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups available for RVs. Each site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and fire ring, perfect for evening gatherings under the stars. While the roads are gravel, they are generally well-maintained, though larger RVs should exercise caution as the layout is most comfortable for medium-sized units and van conversions.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Anglers will find excellent opportunities for trout fishing right in the creek, while hikers can access numerous trails within a short drive. The nearby town of Saratoga is famous for its Hobo Hot Springs, offering a relaxing soak after a day of mountain exploration. Driving the Snowy Range Scenic Byway provides access to Medicine Bow Peak, where visitors can enjoy stunning vistas and high-alpine lakes. The area is also a haven for wildlife viewing, with frequent sightings of moose, deer, and various high-country bird species.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is best suited for self-contained RVers who enjoy dry camping in a scenic, quiet environment. It is perfect for trout fishers, nature photographers, and those looking to escape the crowded commercial resorts for a more authentic wilderness stay. If your travel style involves unplugging and enjoying the serenity of the Wyoming backcountry, this campground provides the perfect basecamp. It is particularly appealing to those who appreciate cool mountain temperatures and the simplicity of life in the National Forest.

We couldn’t get ahold of anyone to get the code to get into the cabin. Completely ruined our 4th of July weekend vacation! We planned and packed to stay in a cabin. We had to return home. Very disappointed! We have stayed at other NP cabins and never expected this problem
