Melville Ponds Campground & RV Park

Overview

Melville Ponds Campground & RV Park offers a peaceful retreat on the northern end of Aquidneck Island. This park provides a wooded and serene environment for travelers looking to explore the coastal beauty of Rhode Island. Unlike the busy atmosphere of nearby city centers, this campground focuses on providing a quiet basecamp where visitors can relax under a canopy of mature trees. It balances rustic charm with modern necessities, ensuring a comfortable stay for both short-term visitors and seasonal guests.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, the park is tucked away from the main thoroughfare, yet remains highly accessible. The surrounding area is characterized by scenic coastal views and rolling landscapes typical of New England. Guests are within walking distance of the Melville Pond and hiking trails, offering immediate access to nature. The location serves as a strategic gateway to the rest of the island, providing a calmer alternative to the dense tourism hubs found further south.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features a variety of site types, including full hookup RV sites that accommodate different rig sizes. On-site facilities include:

  • Clean bathhouses and modern laundry centers.
  • A playground, basketball court, and horseshoe pits for active recreation.
  • A pet-friendly dog park and open green spaces for four-legged travelers.
  • A camp store providing ice, wood, and daily essentials.

Each site is designed to feel private, often equipped with a fire ring and picnic table to enhance the traditional camping experience.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for many visitors is the close proximity to historic Newport, located just a short drive away. Travelers can easily reach the famous Gilded Age mansions, the scenic Cliff Walk, and vibrant waterfront shopping districts. In Portsmouth itself, guests can visit the Green Animals Topiary Garden or enjoy local vineyards. The nearby Sakonnet River also provides opportunities for boating and fishing, making it a prime spot for outdoor enthusiasts and history buffs alike.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal choice for family vacationers and couples who want to experience the sights of Rhode Island without sacrificing peace and quiet. It appeals specifically to RVers who prefer a natural, wooded setting over a paved resort atmosphere. This RV park has a wide variety of FHU sites; 100,200,300 mostly shady, 400 larger open, but the 426-432 pull throughs are very tight. Our site 401 was level, spacious, with great wifi, and plenty of room for our 45’ and toad. Do not enter the campground on Bradford Road, follow the directions for Stringham Road off W Main Road.

This was a nice quiet RV park, not much in the way of amenities to support the price. Close to area things to do. Unfortunately there was a crazy Nor’easter going on for the entire weekend (weather was ok when we arrived and then until the afternoon of the next day). We did venture out to Newport and did some shopping, running in and out of shops in the rain. Employees at the campground were pleasant, we had to call to let them know we’d be late on arrival due to many traffic backups. The woman gave me detailed instructions about where to find the late check-in box and how to find the place. There are 2 ways in off the main road, one is better (Stringham Rd) than the other. Store was disappointing, thankfully we didn’t need anything in a pinch. If the weather had been better I’m sure we would have enjoyed hanging out outside by the campfire and having a lovely time.

We unfortunately had an unforeseen circumstance which prevented us from being able to stay for our intended trip. Jessica went above and beyond to try to help us out with alternative options. She was absolutely amazing to work with, I can't speak highly enough about their customer service, and Jessica in particular!

My wife and I didn’t actually stay there. In fact, we had just stayed at a nearby state park campground, but we needed assistance with some local logistics. Amanda was super friendly and helpful and went out of her way to assist us, even though we had not been guests of the park. She absolutely helped make the rest of our day in Newport a great one. If this is indicative of their service, I can only imagine how nice it would be to stay at that park. Which we will do next time we are in that area…

Such a convenient location; it's like being in town, yet removed from it. All the shops you could want within two miles. We stayed here for the Newport Jazz Festival and couldn't have been happier with the location. Even a vineyard within 15 minutes, as well as a beach! Park staff are all wonderful!
