Memorial Park (Codington County Campground)

Overview

Memorial Park offers a scenic retreat on the northern shores of Lake Kampeska. This Codington County managed facility is widely known for its clean environment and well-spaced sites. It serves as a popular seasonal destination for those looking to enjoy South Dakota’s natural beauty without sacrificing modern comforts. The park provides a quiet, community-focused atmosphere that appeals to both local residents and cross-country travelers seeking a peaceful lakeside stop during their journey.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just northwest of Watertown, the park is defined by its prime proximity to the water. The surrounding landscape features mature trees and vast, open grassy areas, providing a pleasant mix of shade and privacy for campers. Being right on the lake means guests have immediate access to stunning sunsets and refreshing lake breezes. The park also connects seamlessly to the Watertown bike trail system, making it easy to explore the broader area on two wheels.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground is exceptionally well-equipped for modern RVers, offering full hookup sites with both 30 and 50-amp electrical service. For those traveling in larger rigs, there are several spacious pull-through sites available to simplify the setup process. On-site facilities include modern restrooms, hot showers, and convenient laundry services to ensure a comfortable multi-day stay. Families often appreciate the well-maintained playground and the designated swimming beach, which are perfect for cooling off during summer afternoons.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water recreation is the primary draw here, with endless opportunities for boating and fishing directly from the park’s docks or the public boat launch. Beyond the lake, visitors are only a short drive from the Bramble Park Zoo, which is one of the region's most popular family-friendly attractions. History and art enthusiasts can spend an afternoon at the Terry Redlin Art Center. For those who enjoy staying active, the paved trail system offers miles of scenic paths for walking and cycling.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for families and outdoor enthusiasts who desire a balanced mix of lakeside recreation and modern utility. It serves as a perfect home base for travelers seeking a peaceful environment while exploring the charms of eastern South Dakota. Because of the generous site dimensions, it is also an excellent choice for big-rig owners who prefer the tranquility of a county-run park over a more crowded commercial campground.

From the moment I arrived Cindy…Cyndi….(I forgot to ask) was invested in helping me select the best shady spot. Thank you! My little spot was just behind the 1st row of lakeside campers as one enters. I reserved spot 44, on the end of the row near the bike path where, lived a tiny rabbit who darted in and out of the shrub. This was a lovely, albeit only one night stay. Thank you!

We tented - nice bathrooms, warm showers. Kids enjoyed the nature walk, parks, gameroom and fishing. Plenty of space for a game of wiffle ball. 18 hole Frisbee golf course looked fun, unfortunately no disc availability for rent or purchase. Friendly host met us when we checked in.

Memorial Park has a great location on the north side of Lake Kampeska. There are many campsites, amenities for camping, walking trails, boat ramp, and public dock. The trails are beautiful in the fall.
