Mendocino/Letts Lake
Overview
Letts Lake Campground offers a tranquil escape within the Mendocino National Forest, providing a primitive camping experience centered around a pristine 35-acre mountain lake. Situated at an elevation of roughly 4,300 feet, this destination is a favorite for those looking to disconnect from the modern world and immerse themselves in nature. The environment is characterized by lush coniferous forests and a quiet atmosphere that contrasts sharply with the busier, more developed RV resorts found elsewhere in Northern California.
Location & Surroundings
The campground is located approximately 18 miles west of Stonyford, California, accessed via winding forest roads that offer stunning views of the coastal range. The park surrounds the shimmering waters of Letts Lake, where the shoreline is lined with towering pines and firs. Because it is nestled deep within the national forest, visitors should expect a true wilderness setting where cell service is non-existent and the night sky is exceptionally clear, making it a haven for stargazing.
Amenities & Park Features
As a primitive forest service site, the park features basic amenities designed to preserve the natural landscape and provide an authentic outdoor experience. RVers will find level parking spurs, though there are no hookups or dump stations available on-site. Each site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a fire ring for evening gatherings. Water is provided through communal hand pumps, and vault toilets are situated conveniently throughout the loops. The park is best suited for smaller RVs and camper vans due to the narrow and sometimes steep access roads.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the water, where visitors enjoy fishing for rainbow trout and kayaking in the strictly non-motorized, no-wake zones. A popular one-mile trail circles the entire lake, offering an easy hike with multiple spots for birdwatching and wildlife photography. For those seeking more adrenaline, the surrounding forest is known for its extensive network of OHV trails, though the campground itself remains a quiet zone. The nearby Fouts Springs area provides additional exploration opportunities for off-road enthusiasts and hikers alike.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for self-contained RV travelers who prioritize natural beauty and solitude over luxury amenities. If you enjoy dry camping and want to spend your days paddling or hiking right from your doorstep, this is a perfect match. It is particularly well-suited for outdoor enthusiasts and families looking for a traditional camping experience where the focus is on the environment rather than digital connectivity or resort-style entertainment. It is a true retreat for those who come prepared to be fully self-sufficient.

I use to go here many times with my brother in the late 70s and 80s. We always loved it here. Took my wife here 20 years ago and then we took our dogs up to spread some of my brothers ashes just recently. Still excellent campsites, but sorry to see that they had a forest fire here. Still a beautiful lake and so peaceful at times. The drive here is always great and feels like time has stood still.

Been a few years and but awesome camping and the most insanely fun dirt biking. Decent fishing too and it’s nice to take a dip after riding trails for a couple hours.
