Mendocino/Pogie Point
Overview
Pogie Point Campground provides a serene and secluded getaway within the expansive Mendocino National Forest. Situated along the north shore of Lake Pillsbury, this destination is perfect for travelers who want to immerse themselves in a primitive outdoor setting. The park captures a distinct sense of place, where the primary focus is on the natural landscape, offering a peaceful environment that encourages a slower pace of life under the forest canopy away from modern distractions.
Location & Surroundings
The park is nestled deep in the mountains near Potter Valley, surrounded by a rugged wilderness of pine, oak, and fir trees. Reaching the site involves navigating several miles of winding gravel roads, which adds to the feeling of true isolation and adventure. The surrounding terrain is incredibly diverse, featuring rolling hills and shorelines that offer breathtaking views of the water against the backdrop of the California Coast Range peaks.
Amenities & Park Features
Travelers should arrive prepared, as Pogie Point focuses on a rustic camping experience with limited facilities. The campground offers paved or gravel pads with picnic tables and fire rings at individual sites to facilitate traditional campfire evenings. While vault toilets are provided for guest use, there is no pressurized water system or electrical hookups available. RVers must be self-sufficient, ensuring they have ample water and battery power to enjoy their stay in this off-grid location.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Lake Pillsbury is the central attraction, offering excellent opportunities for swimming and fishing for bass or trout throughout the season. A nearby boat launch makes it easy to get out on the water for a day of paddling or motorized exploration. On land, visitors can explore various hiking trails or keep an eye out for the native Tule elk that often roam the nearby meadows. The area is also highly regarded for stargazing due to the minimal light pollution.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is best suited for adventurous RVers who prefer quiet nights and natural beauty over resort-style amenities. It is a fantastic choice for those with smaller, more nimble rigs or high-clearance vehicles capable of handling the unpaved mountain access roads. If you are a traveler who enjoys boating and wildlife spotting while staying in a primitive forest setting, Pogie Point offers a rewarding backcountry experience that is hard to find elsewhere.

We spent one night here over the 4th of July holiday weekend, all the other campgrounds around the lake where full, but this place had plenty of openings. A lot of the tent camping spots in this campground are kinda small and don’t have a lot of flat area for a tent ⛺️. We found one that was next to a very large and loud party that liked to play music and yell most of the night. Other Thant he loud people it was a nice campground
