Overview

Beale FamCamp, located within the expansive grounds of Beale Air Force Base, offers a serene and secure environment for military-affiliated travelers. Surrounded by the rolling foothills of Northern California, this park provides a unique blend of natural beauty and military heritage. It serves as an excellent home base for those looking to explore the Yuba-Sutter region while enjoying a quiet, community-focused atmosphere. Whether you are passing through on a long journey or staying to explore the local area, the park’s mature oak trees and open spaces provide a restful backdrop for your stay.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated in a picturesque part of the base, tucked away from the main operations to ensure a peaceful stay. Guests can enjoy the scenic views and recreational opportunities at Lower Blackwelder Lake, which is just a short walk from many of the campsites. The surrounding landscape features the iconic golden hills of the Sacramento Valley, offering plenty of room for walking and nature photography. While the location feels remote and peaceful, it remains conveniently close to the base’s main services and the neighboring town of Marysville, providing a perfect balance of seclusion and accessibility.

Amenities & Park Features

This FamCamp is well-equipped to handle modern RVs with full hookup sites offering both 30 and 50-amp electrical service. The sites are generally level and spacious, designed to accommodate various rig sizes and configurations. On-site facilities include a clean bathhouse, modern laundry machines, and a central community room for social gatherings or relaxing. Travelers with pets will appreciate the dedicated dog park, allowing four-legged companions to exercise off-leash in a safe environment. The park also provides access to picnic areas and fire rings, encouraging outdoor relaxation during the pleasant California evenings.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to do without ever leaving the base, including fishing and hiking around the scenic on-base lakes. Just a short drive away, the historic cities of Grass Valley and Nevada City offer charming downtown areas filled with boutiques, art galleries, and gold-rush history. The campground office/laundry/lounge/bathroom building is tucked in the back corner of the famcamp area. Depending on the size and type of your RV, you may have to get creative with how you back into your spot which is one of 8 spokes in a fairly compact circle. The fampcamp is made up of several of these circles. The main area is all full hookup. There are some outlying areas with dry camping. There is a separate RV dump a few blocks away from the famcamp. Laundry is free. There are two large washers and dryers that do a good job, but due to the length of time it takes to do a load and the number of campers, there is nearly always someone waiting to do laundry. There were a few times during our 9 week stay that we gave up and went to Joy Laundry that is about 5 miles off-base. The commissary and exchange are about a mile away from the famcamp. Also, make sure to take advanage of the two indoor gyms, the outdoor track that has lights at night, the 6-mile roundtrip path through beautiful cattle pasture, the underused community center, free movies, popular bowling alley and active outdoor rec with lots of day trips on their schedule. There's more to do, you just have to find it! Campground hosts and manager are very responsive and helpful. We were disappointed that there is no monthly rate, but at $30/day, it is a deal considering it is California. In fact, that is such a good bargain that many of the campers are active duty. FYI: The Wheatland gate that is suggested due to the commercial entrance is only open during the work week during the day. At the time of our stay, the Schneider gate was the main 24 hour gate. The Vassar Lake gate is also 24 hours, but is not large enough for an RV.

Like Edwards AFB, a bit of a haul from the interstate, but a tranquil space to catch a beautiful sunrise overlooking grasslands and rolling hills (website header image). Overall, the park appeared fairly well maintained albeit a bit full with permanent party and long-term guests. Home to U2 reconnaissance aircraft, plenty of opportunity to watch them fly pattern work if you are an aviation enthusiast.

My wife and I enjoyed our time here alot. The coyotes would sing every night during "taps" ; clean restrooms, laundry room, clean place to cook and eat if you didn't want to rough it the whole time. Overall a wonderful experience. Thank God for famcamp @beale afb
