Military Park Fourth Cliff Rec Area (Hanscom AFB)

Overview

Fourth Cliff Family Recreation Area is a hidden gem managed by Hanscom Air Force Base. Perched on a 56-acre peninsula, this destination offers a rare opportunity for military-affiliated travelers to stay on a historic coastal site. Once used for WWII defense, the park now serves as a premier retreat for those who appreciate the natural beauty of the Massachusetts shoreline and a quiet, secure environment. The area is steeped in military tradition and provides a safe, community-oriented atmosphere for all eligible patrons.

Location & Surroundings

Located in the village of Humarock, the park is surrounded by water on three sides. It provides a stunning oceanfront vista that overlooks both the Atlantic and the North River estuary. The geography here is unique, featuring high cliffs that offer some of the best sunrises in the region. The location feels wonderfully remote, yet it is close enough to local amenities for convenience. The surrounding town maintains a relaxed, old-fashioned seaside vibe that complements the park's tranquil atmosphere.

Amenities & Park Features

The RV facilities are well-maintained, offering sites equipped with full hookups and 30/50-amp electrical service. Key park features include:

  • Clean bathhouses and laundry facilities
  • A community clubhouse and pavilion
  • Dedicated private beach access
  • Playground and picnic areas with grills

Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy the scenic walking paths that wind through the property, making it easy to enjoy the refreshing coastal breeze.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

While the park is secluded, it is perfectly positioned for exploring the South Shore. You can take a short drive to Scituate Harbor to watch the fishing boats or visit the iconic Old Scituate Light. The historic landmarks of Plymouth, including the Mayflower II and Plimoth Patuxet, are just twenty miles away. Nature lovers can visit the nearby North River for kayaking. Additionally, Boston’s historic Freedom Trail is accessible for a day trip.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal match for active duty and retired military members seeking a budget-friendly oceanfront experience. It is best suited for travelers who prefer a peaceful, rustic setting over a high-activity commercial resort. If you value privacy and scenic views, Fourth Cliff provides a relaxing home base for exploring the rich maritime history and natural wonders of coastal Massachusetts. It is also a great spot for photographers, as the cliffside perches provide incredible light during the golden hour.

A little dated. I’ve been going here for 22 years. Great location beach is as relaxing as it gets. Great for families, you are able to cook your own meals.

Awesome famcamp. This is for military only, so be aware of that. Quiet, views of the Atlantic, when the tide is out sandy beaches. Great place to rest and relax. Laundry, bathhouse, small camp store. Good place to go to Boston or Cape Cod National Seashore for a day.

I love the Fourth Cliff Recreational Area, unfortunately due to erosion it is now a compact area largely for RVs and camping. Each RV spot has its own hook ups for water, waste, and electrical. There is a beautiful campground restroom and bathhouse facility at the bottom of the hill and port-a-loos at the top. The area being in a residential spot is extremely quiet and peaceful, a great way to unwind if you're traveling from afar or even from in state. There are facilities for celebrations and events, spacious and scenic. The cabins are retro mid century modern style, but with all the necessary amenities. Sheets, pillows, blankets, full sized appliances in the kitchens (but no dishwashers). Propane fireplaces add to the scenic beach views on chilly days. The beach is very rocky, but a breathtaking sunset year round. Make sure to familiarize yourself with the erosion warnings upon check in.

As with many military places, no discount for staying longer. She told me two weeks max at a time for RV slots it the "cabins"... Ok... Water pressure was good, electric hookup was excellent, cell reception was as good as we've had in a while... Bath House was spacious and the Hot water was SOO HOT! Laundromat was cozy- 2.50 for smaller washers, same price for BIG dryers. THE VIEW WAS TREMENDOUS!! Few things are nicer for me than to just look out the window and see the shore. We went and waded several times, and got plenty of magic rocks for the grandkids. Aside from the minor inconvenience of having to physically open and close the drive thru gates, it was all good ...

Nice campground in great location. Ocean on one side and river on the other. Good place to catch stripes, hang out at the beach and relax. Shower house was clean and stocked, small store with limited items and it is a decent drive to larger grocery stores so bring what you need.
