Military Park Goodfellow AFB Rec Camp (Goodfellow AFB)

Overview

The Military Park Goodfellow AFB Rec Camp, often referred to as the Lake Recreation Area, provides a serene lakeside escape tailored specifically for the military community. Located on the banks of Lake Nasworthy, this park offers a welcome departure from the typical military installation environment. It serves as a dedicated space for relaxation and outdoor recreation, blending the security of a military facility with the natural beauty of the Texas Concho Valley. Whether you are passing through San Angelo or looking for a long-term stay, the park emphasizes a peaceful atmosphere and family-friendly environment.

Location & Surroundings

Situated on the southwestern edge of San Angelo, the camp sits directly on the shores of Lake Nasworthy. The landscape is characterized by wide-open Texas skies, waterfront views, and mature trees that provide pockets of shade in the desert climate. The surrounding area is relatively quiet, offering a sense of seclusion while remaining just a short drive from the amenities of the main Goodfellow Air Force Base. The lake itself is the focal point, creating a refreshing oasis that is particularly enjoyable during the warm West Texas summers.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features well-maintained full hookup RV sites that accommodate various rig sizes. For those traveling without a trailer, the facility also offers comfortable cabins and designated tent camping areas. Guests have access to essential facilities including:

  • Modern bathhouses and laundry facilities
  • Private boat ramps and fishing piers
  • Picnic pavilions and outdoor grills
The camp store often provides equipment rentals, such as kayaks and paddleboards, allowing visitors to fully engage with the lake's calm waters without needing to bring their own gear.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the lake, visitors can explore the rich history of San Angelo. A short drive leads to the Fort Concho National Historic Landmark, a beautifully preserved frontier army post. Nature lovers should visit the nearby San Angelo State Park, which is home to a portion of the official Texas State Bison Herd. The Concho River Walk in the downtown area offers scenic gardens and walking paths. For local culture, the downtown district features unique boutiques, art galleries, and the world-renowned International Water Lily Collection.

Who This Park Is Best For

This recreation camp is an ideal choice for eligible military ID holders, including active duty service members, retirees, and DoD civilians seeking a budget-friendly lakeside retreat. It is perfect for RVers who prioritize a secure and quiet environment over the crowded nature of commercial parks. Families will appreciate the playground and water access, while retirees often find the relaxed pace and community-oriented vibe very welcoming. If you enjoy fishing, boating, or simply watching a sunset over the water, this park will suit your needs.

This campground is pretty nice. The only reason I am giving them 4 stars is due to the reservation mixup and the delay in response from management. It was all worked out eventually and everyone was nice about it, so that is favorable. The kayaks were good and we spent about 2 hrs out on the water. The hook ups are in good shape and the laundry room is nicer than most. Machines are in nice working order too.

This is the first military RV park that hasn't been part of the military base itself. There Was no need to flash military ID every time you went in and out. Overall, didn't occupy huge amount of territory but there was plenty of spacing between the various rigs that were there. Our site was level, water and electric work exactly as you'd ask. There's are lots of mature trees to give shade, too... The RV park is also right on the lake, and they Pontoon boats as well. There are several large, covered pavilions you can sit at... All in all, it was a great place to stop. There was nothing bad to point out so about anything. They do have a gate they lock at night, and open in the am... In town, we stopped at the Old Fort concho and did a small tour there ourselves. Learned A LOT about the BUFFALO SOLDIERS who operated out of this fort (and others). Overall, very pleasant experience nice area to be in. 👍👍

The RV park at Goodfellow AFB is right by a peaceful lake. The place is clean. There's a cool covered area with picnic tables and grills - great for parties. And there's lots of shade from big trees. We talked to the new manager, and he said they just got new Sea-Doos to rent out. My husband saw someone fishing, so I guess that's allowed too. We stayed in our camper at site #1, but if we go back, we'll ask for site 6 or 8 to get more shade and be closer to the showers, bathrooms, and laundry. Even though our site was by the road, it was still quiet. My only issue is, when we booked, the person on the phone didn't know anything about the campsite, so she couldn't help us pick a spot. They need a map for the phone person or put one online so people can choose where they want to camp.

Awesome place to spend the night. Cabins are spacious and reasonably priced. Right on the lake.

Camping at Goodfellow AFB Recreation Famcamp, Texas for two nights. A nice park that is located off base. There are two small parks, one with shade, one with no shade. It is located on a lake, has laundry room and a swimming pool. There is a gate that closes at night. Full hookup with 30/50 amp, great water pressure. Today only 50% of sites are taken. You can make reservations. $25/night
