Military Park Holloman FamCamp (Holloman AFB)

Overview

Holloman FamCamp is a well-regarded military campground offering a convenient and affordable base for eligible travelers exploring southern New Mexico. Situated within the secure perimeter of Holloman Air Force Base, it provides a strong sense of community and safety for its guests. The park is known for its expansive desert views and proximity to some of the state’s most iconic natural landmarks. It serves as a practical and serene stop for those transitioning between duty stations or retirees seeking a quiet high-desert retreat with excellent value.

Location & Surroundings

The park is nestled in the heart of the Tularosa Basin, surrounded by a rugged landscape of yucca and creosote bushes. To the east, the Sacramento Mountains rise sharply from the valley floor, offering a dramatic backdrop especially during the vibrant desert sunsets. The climate here is typical of the high desert, characterized by wide-open skies that are perfect for stargazing. While on base, visitors are conveniently close to essential services like the Base Exchange and Commissary, which provides a level of comfort and ease not often found in more remote civilian campgrounds.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features both back-in and pull-through sites designed to accommodate a variety of RV sizes. Each site is equipped with full hookups, including 30 and 50-amp electrical service, water, and sewer. The facilities are maintained with care, ensuring a comfortable stay for short-term and long-term guests alike. Key features of the park include:

  • Clean laundry facilities and private shower suites.
  • Access to base recreational facilities including the fitness center and library.
  • Pet-friendly areas for those traveling with four-legged companions.

The sites are generally level and gravel-based, making setup simple for big-rig owners who need extra maneuvering space.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for visitors is undoubtedly White Sands National Park, located just a short drive from the base gate. Here, guests can sled down towering gypsum dunes or hike unique trails through the white sands. History enthusiasts will enjoy the New Mexico Museum of Space History in nearby Alamogordo, which celebrates the region's contribution to aerospace exploration. For a taste of local flavor, a visit to McGinn's PistachioLand offers farm tours and unique treats, while the nearby mountains provide cooler temperatures and lush hiking trails for those seeking a change in scenery.

Who This Park Is Best For

This FamCamp is ideal for military-affiliated travelers, including active duty, retirees, and DAVs, who value security and a quiet environment. It is a perfect fit for families looking for an affordable way to visit the national parks of the Southwest without sacrificing modern conveniences. Because it is located on an active installation, it is best suited for those who appreciate a patriotic atmosphere and don't mind the occasional "sound of freedom" from aircraft operations. It is a top choice for RVers who prefer a structured, safe, and community-oriented camping experience.

Loved the park. Jets flying over was the sound of freedom that stopped after sunset. The sonic booms scared the wife a few times, but she thought it was exciting.

Nice safe place for our 1 night stop over. Had to settle for a dry site(dirt) because we didn't have a reservation. Pretty much filled with full time service personnel. Family Camp isn't the easiest to get to from the front gate if you have a big rig. The base is very busy, new and beautiful.

Lived here for nearly 3 years for my assignment. Cost has gone from $400 a month for a concrete pad spot with electrical/water/sewage hookups, to $500 last year, and recently $600 late 2024. There's no electricity or water costs/fees currently which are big plus. Laundry is available but costs quarters for wash/dry (was free a few years ago). There are cheaper dry camp options but I'd have to look up holloman outdoor rec to see what they are. The host tries to do a communal event ~once every few months with folks bringing food/drinks. They rent a bouncy castle for kids or use one the big outdoor rec displays for a movie night.

Camp is wonderful! One thing needed is a dog park and kids park! Facility is clean and Lorri is wonderful and has 24hr phone service if you have a problem. I was able to reach her during closed hours. More trees and shrubs would be wonderful to spruce things up! Facility is nice and clean as well.
