Overview
Military Park Lake Walker Family Campground offers a peaceful retreat located within the grounds of Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center. Situated just south of Hattiesburg, this military-exclusive destination provides a serene environment away from the hustle of city life. It serves as a vital resource for eligible service members looking for affordable, high-quality outdoor recreation in southern Mississippi.
Location & Surroundings
The campground is perfectly positioned on the shores of Lake Walker, a tranquil body of water that defines the park's character. Surrounded by the vast landscapes of the De Soto National Forest, the area is characterized by rolling hills and dense woodlands. The setting is ideal for those who appreciate birdwatching or the simple pleasure of a sunset over the water. While the base itself is an active training site, the campground remains a quiet pocket of natural beauty.
Amenities & Park Features
Visitors can choose from various sites featuring full hookups with 30 and 50-amp service, accommodating a range of RV sizes. The facilities are well-maintained, including a clean bathhouse and convenient laundry facilities to make longer stays more comfortable. Each site typically includes a picnic table and fire ring for evening gatherings. For those looking to get on the water, there is a boat launch available, and the lake is frequently used for fishing and paddle sports.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
One of the top highlights right on base is the Mississippi Armed Forces Museum, which showcases the state’s rich military history. A short drive into Hattiesburg provides access to the Hattiesburg Zoo and the historic downtown district, known for its local dining and shopping. Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the proximity to the Longleaf Trace, a premier rails-to-trails project perfect for cycling and walking, as well as the numerous hiking trails throughout the surrounding national forest.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal match for military retirees and active-duty families who possess the required identification for base access. It appeals most to those who prefer a rustic and quiet camping experience rather than a high-traffic commercial resort. Travelers seeking a secure, budget-friendly stopover or a long-term base for exploring the Pine Belt region will find Lake Walker to be a welcoming and scenic home away from home.

Love this RV campground, quiet, small . You have a choice of an open area for large rigs or wooded for mostly small to medium size rigs. It's a military Campground for active duty or retired military.

Well maintained cabins right on the lake in Camp Shelby. Quite and clean. We had an issue with a missing remote for the fan on the porch and within an hour they were back with a replacement. The staff was very friendly. Just don't close the door without your key in hand, you will get locked out of your cabin.

Amazing office staff, beautiful large back in and pull through sites. Lakes, tree lines and walking pathways are fantastic.
