Military Park Round Pond Rec Area (U.S. Military Academy)

Overview

Round Pond Recreation Area offers a tranquil retreat for eligible military members and their families within the grounds of the United States Military Academy. This facility provides a unique opportunity to stay on historic grounds while enjoying the natural splendor of the Hudson Highlands. The park is characterized by its quiet, wooded environment and serves as a primary recreational hub for those visiting West Point. It provides a distinct departure from standard commercial parks, focusing on nature-centric experiences and military community camaraderie in a secure setting.

Location & Surroundings

Located just a few miles from the main gates of West Point, the park is situated around a beautiful mountain lake. The surroundings are densely forested, offering a secluded atmosphere that feels worlds away from the nearby metropolitan areas. Travelers will appreciate the winding roads and the elevation changes that define this region of New York. Because it is positioned within a military installation area, guests should be prepared for standard security protocols and a very well-maintained, orderly environment throughout their stay.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features a variety of site types, including full hookup RV pads and more primitive options for those seeking a traditional camping experience. Visitors have access to clean bathhouses, a laundry facility, and a playground for children. One of the highlights is the direct access to the water, where guests can enjoy boat rentals and fishing on Round Pond. The park also maintains several hiking trails that weave through the woods, providing ample opportunities for birdwatching and photography right from your doorstep.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Staying here puts you in a prime position to explore the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, including the historic cadet chapel and Trophy Point. The West Point Museum is a must-visit for history enthusiasts, showcasing an extensive collection of military artifacts. Just a short drive away, Bear Mountain State Park offers incredible views of the Hudson River and extensive trail networks like the Appalachian Trail. Additionally, the nearby town of Highland Falls provides local dining and shopping options for those needing supplies.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal match for military retirees and active-duty families who enjoy a rustic, quiet pace and a sense of security. It is particularly well-suited for families visiting cadets at the academy who want the convenience of staying close to campus without the bustle of local hotels. Because of its peaceful and wooded nature, it is best for RVers who prefer natural scenery and outdoor recreation over high-end resort amenities. It serves as a perfect home base for exploring Hudson Valley history.

What a perfect stop for us on our New England road trip! This area is beautiful! We loved the site we had-#C1. The day we left we rented the pedal boat for $4. Lovely walk around the campground!

Great place to camp at super cheap prices. I paid 24$ for my tent campsite. The site had a fire ring, grill, and picnic table setup for use. The campground is very clean and has everything you could need for a few days of good camping. There is a lake at the campground with all sorts of toys for rent at very cheap pricing.

Quiet rustic location to camp that is available only to the active and veteran military. We enjoyed our stay and would love to visit again. To access campgrounds may be white-knuckling for RV drivers. The very narrow, no-shoulders road is a 4%-6% uphill grade for about one mile. To my knowledge, it is the only access to enter and exit. Note: trying to arrive after dark may be an intimidating drive, especially for large-size RVs. Once you enter the campgrounds the road flattens but the roads to the campsites are still narrow and one-way direction I assume because of narrowness. However, campsites have built-in serenity. Partial hookup with 30 amp and water only. Typical Sites fit RV and second vehicles very easily including tow dolly. Plenty of outdoor opportunities on campgrounds, and local things to see and visit nearby besides seeing West Point. A recommendation is to visit the Bethel Woods Museum where the famous 1969 Woodstock Concert was held. It's 1 hour away. FYI, the Woodstock concert was not held in Woodstock, NY. It is in Bethel Woods, NY. To the Chief Interior Director (i.e., wives or partners 😀), if you need to pick up supplies and goodies, I recommend visiting Walmart, etc before arriving. I didn't see one nearby. Enjoy

Wow, breathtakingly peace filled and wonderfully packed with options for fun on site. The rules are very clear and provided in the welcome pack. This was my first experience here and am very pleased. Definitely returning. I’m not certain how big rigs get up the winding road in or out. In my six speed Jeep Wrangler dropped the gear down to crawl up and around and S curl again and again. God bless anyone with a big rig who can navigate the path. Took a few pictures to give ya the vibe. I’m so happy I found this place and am able to use stay. And, really nice helpful staff on the phone. Very accommodating to my arrival change. Side note, I’m a native NYer. Grew up in the area. The beauty never ceases to amaze me. As a veteran found this location and am so happy. My sis lives in Highland Falls, so it’s close by and it was nice inviting her for a walk and breakfast. Even if you’re from NY, definitely visit. You won’t be disappointed. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💯

Away from everything and in the woods around the lake. We have tmobile and only a few spots had connectivity. Spot 17 is really good. There is only one shower and restroom bldg and can be a far walk for spots on other side of lake. Only water and electric hook ups for RV spots with 1 dump station near the showers. The laundry is adjacent to showers and is pay $1.75. There are boats to rent and a swimming area. Places to hike as well. Very quiet. Some sites require leveling. There is a small store on site and a manned office. A care taker is on site 24 hrs. RV Sites ring around the lake and some are up high on the hill. Military ID is required for access. Great place for under $30 a night.
