Minneopa
Overview
Minneopa State Park is one of Minnesota's oldest and most iconic outdoor destinations, offering RV travelers a chance to explore a diverse and historic landscape. The park is most famous for its stunning double waterfall and a sprawling prairie that serves as a sanctuary for a protected bison herd. Visiting here provides a peaceful escape where the sound of rushing water and the sight of roaming wildlife define the daily experience, making it a must-visit for those trekking through the Minnesota River Valley.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just west of Mankato, the park sits nestled within the scenic Minnesota River valley. The surrounding area is a striking mix of lush woodlands and expansive native tallgrass prairie. Its proximity to the city makes it an incredibly accessible stop for those traveling through southern Minnesota, while the geographic layout ensures you still feel remote enough to enjoy the quiet of nature and the dark night skies common in the rural Midwest.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground at Minneopa State Park offers several electric RV sites that can accommodate various rig sizes, providing a comfortable base for your stay. Essential facilities include seasonal showers, modern restrooms, and a convenient dump station for self-contained travelers. For those looking to experience the park's unique wildlife, the bison drive allows visitors to view the majestic animals from the safety and comfort of their own vehicles as they traverse the 330-acre range.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw for visitors is the namesake falls, where Minneopa Creek drops over two distinct limestone ledges into a deep sandstone gorge. Hikers can enjoy miles of trails that wind through the valley or visit the historic Seppmann Mill, a wind-powered flour mill built in the 1860s that offers a glimpse into the region's pioneer past. Additionally, the Red Jacket Trail is nearby, offering a scenic paved route for cyclists and walkers that connects the park to the broader Mankato trail system.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for nature lovers and photographers who appreciate wildlife viewing and scenic landscapes. It is perfect for RVers who prefer a rustic, quiet atmosphere over a busy resort environment. Because of the unique bison range and the easily accessible waterfalls, it is also a fantastic destination for families with children looking for an educational outdoor adventure that balances natural beauty with historical discovery.

It was a little more rustic than I expected but it was nice. Vault toilets. Water we didn't drink..discolored. bathrooms were clean. Bison were cool. Waterfall was cool. Hiking trails nice. Quiet campground although we were there weekdays. Heard owls and coyotes at night...cool. firewood to purchase was scarce.

Beautiful waterfalls! Really pouring water in the spring, a lot of the trails were blocked off the time of year I went so not much of a hike. Fair amount of stairs and rock climbing to get close to the falls but plenty of paved and easy going pathes if you just want to see them from the top.

Tremendous waterfall and fun hike. Lovely walk with freshly misted sprinkles from the falls. Hike isn't the easiest and more challenging for some; if water levels too high path may be covered to get to falls base. By the stairs leading down to the falls base is a sign that says the trek is 70 steps down and 70 steps up. It is 0.15mi from top of the stairs to base of waterfall. Enjoy the trip!

Such a quaint and beautiful place for a quick walk. The weather was pleasant despite it being early spring. Was expecting cold winds but thankfully the day was pleasant which heightened the experience. The walk down the falls was easy making it fun for kids as well as the elderly. A must visit place if you're looking for something close to the twin cities with less crowds.

Site was WAY too close to the restrooms.
