Mississippi River - COE/Leech Lake
Overview
The Mississippi River - COE campground at Leech Lake offers a serene escape where the mighty Mississippi begins its journey from the reservoir. Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this park provides a well-maintained setting for those looking to immerse themselves in Northern Minnesota's natural beauty. It serves as a gateway to the vast waters of Leech Lake, combining the charm of a riverfront stay with the expansive recreation opportunities of one of the state's largest lakes.
Location & Surroundings
Tucked away in Federal Dam, MN, the park is situated at the Leech Lake Dam, providing a unique landscape where the lake meets the river. The area is heavily wooded, offering significant shade and a sense of privacy for campers. Travelers will find themselves surrounded by the Chippewa National Forest, which provides a lush backdrop of pine and hardwood forests. The sounds of rushing water and local wildlife create a peaceful atmosphere far from highway noise.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground features spacious sites, many of which offer 50-amp electric hookups to accommodate modern RVs. While it maintains a rustic feel, guests have access to essential comforts including:
- Modern shower facilities and flush toilets for guest convenience.
- A well-maintained concrete boat ramp and accessible fishing pier for easy water access.
- A centralized dump station and potable water fill sites located within the grounds.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Anglers flock here for the world-class walleye and muskie fishing found in the depths of Leech Lake. Beyond the water, the nearby Lost 40 Scientific and Natural Area allows visitors to walk among old-growth pines that escaped logging in the 1800s. The surrounding national forest offers miles of hiking and biking trails, while birdwatchers can frequently spot bald eagles and ospreys nesting near the dam. The small community of Federal Dam provides a quiet, slow-paced environment for local exploration.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for nature lovers and anglers who prioritize water access and quiet surroundings over resort-style amenities. It is a perfect fit for RVers who enjoy the COE park experience, which typically offers larger site spacing and natural landscapes. Whether you are a solo traveler looking for a peaceful retreat or a family wanting to spend the week fishing and exploring the woods, this park offers a classic Minnesota outdoor experience.

Very clean and spacious sires. If you’re a fisherman there’s place to clean your fish.! The army corps of engineers hit it out of the park… thank you for your service !

What a great campground that earns 5 stars plus in every possible way. It is extremely well maintained by a nice friendly and helpful staff. The campsites are overly generous in size and they are level with utilities that work perfectly. Antenna TV works well considering the remote location, so did our AT&T and Verizon cell reception. What more could one wish for ?

Great campground. All of the sites I surveyed were level and easy to back in. The laundry room has two washers and two dryers that are available at no charge. Wow! That was nice. Most of the sites have electric only, but a few are full hookups. You can do a fresh water fill at the dump station. Speaking of the dump station: Only one camper at a time can dump. One could double back and pull up to the station, but you only have one drainage hole. This might be useful if you only needed water. You could get water while someone else was dumping. There is a lot to do in the nearby towns. A lot of the campers here had their fishing boats with them. Be sure to check out the 600+ year old tree (pictured) during your stay.

Beautiful COE campground. Get water at dump station before parking! Prepare for mosquitoes! Take advantage of their wonderful showers and free laundry. Come back when you can unless you’re like me 1000 miles away.
