Mississippi River - COE/Shady Creek

Overview

Shady Creek Campground is a well-regarded U.S. Army Corps of Engineers facility located directly on the banks of the Mississippi River near Muscatine, Iowa. This park is defined by its mature timber canopy, which provides ample shade and a sense of seclusion for every guest. Unlike busy commercial parks, Shady Creek offers a tranquil environment where the primary focus is on the natural beauty of the river valley. It is an excellent destination for travelers seeking a clean, managed environment that highlights the rugged charm of the Upper Mississippi.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the Fairport area just eight miles upstream from Muscatine, the park sits on Pool 16 of the Mississippi River. The surrounding landscape is a mix of lush river bottomlands and high bluffs, offering a dramatic backdrop for photography and wildlife viewing. It is important to note that the park is positioned between the river and an active rail line; the frequent passing of trains is a signature part of the local experience. The proximity to the water provides a constant breeze and a front-row seat to the commercial barge traffic moving along the river.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is designed to accommodate modern RVs while maintaining a natural feel. Most sites feature level concrete pads and provide 50-amp or 30-amp electrical hookups. While the sites do not offer individual sewer connections, the park provides a conveniently located dump station and fresh water fill-up points. On-site amenities include a private boat ramp for easy river access, a playground for families, and a modern shower house located near the entrance. The campground is meticulously maintained, featuring clean vault toilets and well-manicured green spaces throughout the loops.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Boating and fishing are the primary draws here, with the river offering excellent opportunities to catch walleye, bass, and catfish. Just a short drive away, Wildcat Den State Park offers historical sites like the Pine Creek Grist Mill and several miles of scenic hiking trails through sandstone bluffs. In Muscatine, visitors can explore the National Pearl Button Museum to learn about the city’s unique history as the pearl button capital of the world. The area is also a hotspot for birdwatchers, especially during migratory seasons when bald eagles are frequently spotted.

Who This Park Is Best For

Shady Creek is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and anglers who want direct access to the water without the high price tag of a private resort. It is a perfect fit for families who enjoy traditional camping activities like campfires and bike riding. Because of the spacious sites and easy navigation, it is also a great choice for big-rig owners who prefer a more rustic, scenic setting. If you value a quiet, shaded retreat and don't mind the rhythmic sound of passing trains, this COE park is one of the best values in the region.

Clean, well-priced campground. Nice location right on the river. Tent sites were roomy and removed from the RVs, which we appreciated. Only negative was that the street lights are very bright all night - had to wear an eye mask. The train tracks also are right by campground so we were woken up twice in the night.

What a great camping area! I truly enjoyed this campground. All the sites have a lengthy concrete pad, 50 amp, picnic table and fire pit. The facilities were clean and spacious. There was a beautiful flower garden in front of the bath house we used. Being located right on the Mississippi River is great. There’s a small boat dock. Large gazebo. Playground. The price is affordable. The host who greeted me was absolutely lovely! I thought it was First Come First Serve, but they’re actually on Rec.gov. Thankfully they had 2 sites available at 10 am on a Sat morning in mid September. Great location just a few minutes from Wildcat Den State Park and close to Muscatine. Just under 25 minutes from Wilton. Contrary Brewery in Muscatine is veteran owned and has an excellent beer selection with food!

Nice campground with good facilities. It’s very quiet and peaceful. Main downside is the Corps doesn’t keep up maintenance of the boat ramp. It is too shallow to use. Two stars gone for that since we are boaters and we have to drive to another campground to put our boat in.

Awesome campground right off the river. The spots are huge and fully paved. Clean bathrooms that are regularly cleaned and smell nice! We will definitely be coming back!

Trailer Park camping with a nice view. The first 11 sites are set up for winter camping ( just a spot to camp no electricity no water. There is a pit toilet over by. The boat ramp ) being open during the winter time is really nice for people like me who roam the country . I Appreciate that ,thank you Iowa. The grounds of this facility are taking care of nicely. There is a small trail that walks around the backside of this campground. Take heed that this campground is set between the railroad tracks and the river and between the two of them is a distance of about 600 yards. .
