Moccasin Creek
Overview
Nestled along the shores of Lake Burton in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, Moccasin Creek State Park is often referred to as the park where spring spends the summer. This tranquil destination offers a refreshing escape from the Georgia heat, providing a lush, green environment for RV travelers. The park is one of the smallest and most intimate in the state system, creating a peaceful mountain atmosphere that focuses on the natural beauty of the North Georgia landscape. It serves as a premier basecamp for those wanting to explore the wilderness while enjoying modern comforts.
Location & Surroundings
Located in Clarkesville, Georgia, the park sits at a high elevation surrounded by the Chattahoochee National Forest. The site is uniquely positioned between the sparkling waters of Lake Burton and the rushing waters of Moccasin Creek. This geographic combination provides travelers with stunning waterfront views and access to deep-water boating alongside the calming sounds of a mountain stream. The surrounding terrain is characterized by dense forests and rugged mountain ridges that provide a perfect backdrop for outdoor exploration and photography.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground offers well-maintained sites that cater to various RV sizes. While the park maintains a rustic feel, it provides modern necessities such as 30 and 50-amp electrical hookups and water connections at every site. Visitors have access to clean, heated bathhouses and a convenient on-site dump station. The park features a dedicated fishing pier on the lake and a separate trout fishing stream specifically for seniors and children, ensuring everyone has a chance to enjoy the local wildlife. Paved camping pads help provide a level surface for easy setup.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to do right outside their camper door. The Burton Fish Hatchery is located adjacent to the park and offers fascinating insights into local aquatic life. For hikers, the trailhead for Hemlock Falls is just a short distance away, leading to a spectacular waterfall hidden within the forest. Boating and kayaking on the lake are popular pastimes, while the nearby town of Clarkesville offers charming local dining and boutique shopping for those seeking a day of leisure and mountain culture.
Who This Park Is Best For
Moccasin Creek is an ideal choice for fishing enthusiasts and families looking for a quiet, nature-focused retreat. Because the park is relatively flat compared to other mountain locations, it is exceptionally easy to navigate for those with larger rigs. It is perfect for travelers who prioritize outdoor recreation over resort-style amenities. If your travel style involves waking up to mountain mist and spending your days on the water, this park will feel like a perfect home away from home.

It is Georgia's smallest State Park. It is a campground on the lake with a dock and boat launch. They also have a restricted fishing area for kids and Senior Adults.

Loved this venue! It was a "perfect" stop, affordable, well-maintained and well worth the drive. We packed a lunch, took our fishing poles and our cooler with a few cold drinks, that was all we needed. Highlights are: 1) special places designated for seniors and kids to fish where you can actually see the fish. 2) It cost us 6 bucks to park, entry was free. 3) You can buy any supplies you need when you pay to park at the cool entrance store. 4) It's right next door to the fish hatchery which is a free educational experience. They release fish into the water just above this place twice a week which helps ensure fishing success 🙌 . 5) It's an RV camp, a vacation spot and a glorious place to commune with nature. 6) There's a boat ramp and lots of swings and benches and picnic tables around for your enjoyment and relaxation. All in all " we loved Mocassin Creek State Park"!! It turned out to be the highlight of our vacation because we went back to where we were staying with fresh trout to cook on our grill for dinner. That was way cool !

I had a lovely day visit here with my children. We played on the playground and saw some ducks, baby ducks and geese. It's very peaceful here. No swimming but fishing is allowed, please check there site for the details, we did not do that, just saw people doing it. There is a few places for camping and lots of little three person swings overlooking the water. I had a lovely day here. $5 parking that can be used at other nearby National Parks(or local parks...ask front desk to be sure. ) There is hiking nearby and it all overlooks Lake Burton. We will definitely be returning.
