Monahans Sandhills

Overview

Monahans Sandhills State Park offers a striking landscape that feels worlds away from the typical Texas plains. Known as the Sahara of the Southwest, this park protects a vast area of active sand dunes that shift with the wind. Visitors are greeted by rolling peaks of fine sand, some reaching heights of 70 feet, creating a surreal backdrop for an overnight stay. Whether you are stopping for a night or a weekend, the physical beauty of the dunes is unmatched.

Location & Surroundings

Conveniently located just off Interstate 20 near Monahans, the park is an easy detour for travelers crossing West Texas. Despite its proximity to the highway, the dunes provide a natural buffer that fosters a sense of isolation. The surrounding area is part of the Chihuahuan Desert, featuring a unique ecosystem where the shinnery oak forest grows, which helps stabilize the ever-moving sands while providing a home for local wildlife.

Amenities & Park Features

The park provides well-maintained camping facilities suited for modern RVers within the Willow Mountain Area. The sites are designed to accommodate a variety of rig sizes. Park features include:

  • Water and 30/50-amp electrical hookups at most sites.
  • Shaded picnic tables and outdoor grills for desert dining.
  • Access to a centralized dump station and modern restrooms with showers.

Additionally, the visitor center offers sand disk rentals, allowing guests to slide down the dunes just steps from their campsite.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary activity here is exploring the dunes on a sand disk, a thrilling experience for both kids and adults. Hikers can wander freely across the sand, as there are no fixed trails in the shifting environment. Nearby, the Million Barrel Museum in the city of Monahans offers a glimpse into the region’s oil history. Birdwatching is also popular near the limited water sources and vegetation patches found throughout the park.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal destination for families and outdoor enthusiasts looking for a giant, natural playground. It also appeals to photographers and stargazers who appreciate the unobstructed desert horizons. It is a perfect fit for cross-country travelers on I-20 who prefer a scenic, quiet state park experience over a standard roadside RV lot. If you enjoy unique geological features and a relaxed pace, this park is a must-visit.

This place is beautiful. Its just the White Sands National Park in New Mexico. Its like a big park. Go with your family. Take your kids to ride their bikes, play volleyball, camping, bbquieng, etc....

This place was wonderful! The bathrooms were clean with hot water and fantastic water pressure in the showers. All the camping sites had electricity and water as well as a covered picnic table. Site 8 was great, but it is at the bottom of one of the main Sandhills everyone slides on so there is constantly a lot of people around, Site 17 is great cause there is only one site beside it and if no one gets it, you are pretty isolated. The Park Rangers are really helpful and drive around the sites often, and they have a wonderful information/visitors center. They also keep the info board (near the bathroom) updated daily with important phone numbers and available sites for anyone that comes in after the visitor center closes. I am so glad we came here!

I’ve stayed here a couple times and it’s a great little park. Camping is right in the sand but there is asphalt parking for vehicles and rvs. The bathrooms have always been spotless, hot water and great water pressure in the showers. Pretty sure all sites have electricity and water, mine all have. Also some day use picnic spots and they are all pretty private thanks to the dunes. I’ve seen scaled quail and mule deer but the big draw is to hike around on the sand dunes! Check it out!!

The sand dunes are very pretty and the beautiful visitors center museum alone is worth the price of admission. If you have kids the dunes are a great way to wear them out. There's even an educational Monahans-themed arcade game (I got a very poor score). My only wish is that there was more traditional hiking. You can climb around on the sand dunes. But that's not really the same thing. There's a nature trail outside the visitors center. But it's VERY short.

We enjoyed our stay at Monahans Sandhills State Park. Those in the office went above and beyond to help us make our reservation when the online system gave us trouble. The park is clean and well kept. It’s such a unique place and worth visiting!
