Monongahela/Seneca Shadows
Overview
Seneca Shadows Campground serves as a premier gateway to the rugged beauty of the Monongahela National Forest. Situated at the base of the iconic Seneca Rocks formation in West Virginia, this facility offers a blend of primitive charm and modern convenience. It is a Forest Service site designed for those who appreciate mountain vistas and the quiet rhythm of the forest. The park provides a serene environment where the dramatic rock faces dominate the horizon, offering a sense of scale and natural wonder that few other campgrounds can match.
Location & Surroundings
Located in the Potomac Highlands, the campground is nestled along the North Fork South Branch Potomac River. The surrounding landscape is defined by steep ridges, deep valleys, and lush hardwood forests. Seneca Rocks itself towers nearly 900 feet above the valley floor, creating a breathtaking backdrop for campers. This location provides a cool, shaded environment during the summer months and serves as a central hub for exploring the high-altitude terrain of the Potomac District.
Amenities & Park Features
While the atmosphere is rustic, the park provides essential comforts for RVers. The facility includes electric hookups available in Loop C, which is a significant draw for those traveling in campers. Guests have access to modern bathhouses equipped with hot showers and flush toilets, as well as several vault toilets throughout the loops. Each site is furnished with a campfire ring and picnic table. A central dump station and potable water fill stations ensure that self-contained rigs are well-supported during their stay.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the world-class rock climbing found at Seneca Rocks, but the area offers much more. Hikers can tackle the Seneca Rocks National Recreation Trail to reach a stunning observation platform. A short drive takes visitors to Spruce Knob, the highest point in West Virginia, offering 360-degree views. Anglers will find excellent trout fishing in the nearby river, while the local Discovery Center provides historical context about the region’s unique geology and Appalachian culture.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize scenery and access to trails over luxury resort amenities. It is a perfect fit for climbers, photographers, and families looking for a digital detox since cell service is extremely limited in the valley. If you enjoy stargazing and the sound of a crackling fire under a dark mountain sky, Seneca Shadows provides a quiet, authentic West Virginia camping experience that captures the essence of the mountains.

Our campsite was beautiful. We stayed at B16 which is a double site with lots of privacy and across from bathhouse. Our only problem resulting in the 4 stars was the bathhouse. It really needs cleaning and an update would not hurt. There is no heat and the shower had a large clump of hair in the drain for our whole stay. I did not shower as it was dirty and did not think I would feel clean afterwards. There is no heat in the bathhouse. We stayed for two nights. The wood is $8 per bundle available at the camp manager’s site.

Excellent campground. Easily accessible camping spots, bucolic and with beautiful background scenery, well-maintained, and within walking distance of the nearby general stores as well as Seneca rocks. Bathroom facilities were a little constrained but at least the single showers had hot water!

I'm absolutely glad we found Seneca Shadows campground on our trip to West Virginia. We camped in lot 7, which is a first come, first serve site. This site is close to the bathhouse, clean, and spacious. We camped here in mid-June, and the songbirds in the morning were unbelievable. What a great way to wake! There are several loops to choose from in the campground. Some sites are resevable. The bathhouse was very clean and the staff was super friendly. Highly recommend this campground if in the area. We would definitely stay again!!

Went car camping with my dog Oct 21-23. The trees were beautiful, the stars were bright, and the hike at Seneca was perfect. It was Monday-Wednesday so the sites were pretty empty. As a solo female camper, I felt safe. Site 12 is without electric and water at the site, but there are water and outlets in the bathroom. The first two loops of camping spots are without water and electric (I believe) and the 20s+ loops had electric for sure. I have a car converter so no electric wasn’t an issue for me. Pro tip: Amazon solar yard lights were a hit. My site had tons of trees and shade which was perfect for the hot afternoon but I do regret not being able to see the stars as I drifted to sleep. The tent camping on the last loop is in a big field which maybe would’ve been cooler. I’m sure we could’ve moseyed down there for some gazing but it’s a long walk back. For the tent only spots, you have to walk a few steps from the parking lot to set up camp, but the view of Seneca is gorgeous there and the stars were insane, I’m sure. Bathrooms were cleaned daily and even had hot water! The shower is an old school push nozzle, but give it two pushes and you’ll get hot water. Site 12 is near the road but is huge and has two tent pads and picnic tables. I do regret not being closer to the bathroom, but the road traffic wasn’t bad and my dog could freely roam. I recommend getting wood from the last Kroger for cheaper bundles. If you run out, camp managers have some! $8 a bundle, 3 for $22. We will definitely be coming back in the future to explore a little more!

This camp ground is really clean, well maintained and close to trails. We really enjoyed warm showers! It has beautiful views from some camping spots. There is only one problem. If you are a light sleeper then there is a heavy tractor-trailer traffic caring cement from near by manufactory. I could not sleep well at the camp ground #71 because it was so close to the road intersection behind the trees. We had to leave earlier after a couple of nights and went to Spruce Knob campground (totally peaceful). If you don't care about traffic noise then this is a good location. Nicely cut grass, friendly personnel, close to the convenience store and hiking trails.
