Montauk
Overview
Montauk State Park stands as one of Missouri's most beloved outdoor destinations, established in the 1920s to preserve the headwaters of the Current River. It is renowned for its abundant trout population, which draws anglers from across the country to its clear, cool waters. The park maintains a perfect balance between its historic roots and modern recreation, featuring a preserved 19th-century grist mill that serves as a centerpiece for the park's rich cultural heritage and a reminder of the region's agricultural past.
Location & Surroundings
Located roughly 20 miles from the town of Salem, the park is deeply embedded in the Ozark Mountains of south-central Missouri. The surrounding terrain is characterized by steep, timbered hills and deep valleys that provide a dramatic and secluded backdrop for your RV stay. The site is famous for the Montauk Spring, which pumps millions of gallons of cold water into the river daily, creating a unique microclimate that remains refreshing and vibrant even during the peak of the Missouri summer.
Amenities & Park Features
The RV-friendly campgrounds offer a variety of sites, including many equipped with 30-amp and 50-amp electric hookups to accommodate different rig types. While the setting is rugged, the amenities provide necessary comforts, featuring modern restrooms, hot showers, and a central dump station for convenient waste management. The park also hosts an on-site lodge and restaurant, providing a nice break from campfire cooking. A well-stocked park store ensures that fishermen and campers have easy access to essential tackle, bait, and snacks.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Beyond the famous fishing banks, visitors can immerse themselves in the Ozark National Scenic Riverways. This protected area is a haven for water sports, specifically floating and kayaking down the crystal-clear Current River. Hiking enthusiasts can tackle the park's loop trails that wind through the hardwood forests, while history buffs will appreciate the architectural details of the old mill. Nearby, the Echo Bluff State Park offers additional geological wonders and impressive limestone bluffs just a short drive through the scenic countryside.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is the ultimate choice for fishing enthusiasts and families seeking a classic, nature-focused getaway. It is particularly well-suited for those who prefer the quiet rhythms of the forest and the sound of rushing water over the high-energy amenities of a commercial resort. The park accommodates various rig sizes, making it a great stop for motorhomes and travel trailers looking to experience the authentic beauty and peaceful solitude of rural Missouri's natural springs.

I love that they always have evening learning events for people that are also fun! This time was a grave yard tour that was interesting. The park is always well kept. Fishing is great and the lodge's ice cream is always a must!

This place was like going to another world, the environment was so peaceful. I found a place where all my worries went non existent. The staff was very down to earth and friendly. I felt like I was in a magical place from a movie.

My fav trout park in MO. Not as crazy as Bennett. Easy access to fishing. Nice places to fish. The lodge store and restaurant are always fun. Great family time. Tip: if you want to learn how to catch a trout go to the lodge and ask the guys and gals there. Or if you are really a newbie just buy the “Montauk special” lure and you should have good luck.
