Moon Lake Park

Overview

Moon Lake Park provides a peaceful, lakeside setting for travelers visiting the Iron River area. Managed by the local municipality, this park offers a balance between modern convenience and the rugged beauty of Northern Wisconsin. It serves as an accessible basecamp for those looking to enjoy waterfront camping without the bustle of larger private resorts. The park is particularly known for its unobstructed lake views and easy-going atmosphere that reflects the local culture.

Location & Surroundings

Situated directly on the shores of Moon Lake, the park is nestled within a lush, wooded landscape. It is conveniently located just off Highway 2, making it an easy stop for those traversing the Lake Superior south shore. The surrounding area is defined by the dense forests of the Chequamegon-Nicolet region, offering a serene backdrop of pine and hardwood trees. The location provides a perfect balance, being close enough to town for convenience yet far enough to feel immersed in nature.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features well-maintained sites equipped with electric and water hookups, catering to most modern RV setups. Visitors have access to a clean bathhouse with showers, a convenient on-site dump station, and a communal pavilion for group gatherings. The highlight for many is the sandy swimming beach and public boat launch, which allow guests to transition from their campsite to the water in minutes. The sites are designed to provide a sense of space, often shaded by mature trees that offer privacy.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to do, from fishing for panfish and bass on the lake to exploring the Tri-County Corridor, a 60-mile trail perfect for biking and hiking. A short drive leads to the world-renowned Brule River for trout fishing or the scenic Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. The area is a gateway to the Northwoods, making it a prime destination for those interested in birdwatching or searching for local wildlife in their natural habitat.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for families and outdoor hobbyists who prioritize water access and a quiet atmosphere. It appeals most to those who enjoy a rustic, community-park vibe over a high-intensity resort experience. It is also a great fit for retirees who enjoy a slower pace of life and the ability to launch a kayak right from the park grounds. Whether you are a weekend warrior or a long-distance traveler, Moon Lake Park offers a welcoming and authentic Wisconsin Northwoods experience.

This is a great place to bring kids and spend the day. There's a decent size parking area, sand beach, and swimming area with 2 docks, plus you can take a little swim out to one of two rafts. There's also a playground and partially enclosed area with picnic tables. There's also a few grills, so bring hot dogs, hamburgers, etc... to grill food and spend the day relaxing on the beach.

Quiet, conveniently located campground with nice amenities including public bathrooms, public lake access, shade and you're right off of Hwy H, near Hwy 2 in Iron River. Off the beaten path but only a few miles from Iron River grocery store, gas, Subway, A&W, Angie's Bakery, Pizza Parlor and the dollar store. Please click 👍 if this was helpful.

We were the only ones in sight this evening. My niece and I explored the shoreline in kayaks. The fishing was great. Bass, crappie and bluegill
