Moonshine Lake
Overview
Moonshine Lake Provincial Park is a peaceful year-round destination tucked away in the scenic Peace Country of northwestern Alberta. Known for its lush greenery and calm waters, this park offers a classic boreal forest experience that appeals to those looking for a quiet retreat. Whether you are visiting for a weekend of summer fishing or a crisp winter getaway, the park provides a serene natural environment that feels miles away from the bustle of city life while remaining easily accessible for large rigs.
Location & Surroundings
Situated approximately 27 kilometers west of the town of Spirit River, the park is nestled within a landscape of rolling hills and dense aspen and spruce forests. The lake itself is a small, spring-fed body of water that serves as a focal point for all park activities. The surrounding area is characterized by the vast agricultural fields of the Peace River region, but once you enter the park boundaries, you are enveloped in a private, wooded sanctuary that offers excellent wildlife viewing opportunities and privacy between campsites.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground features over 100 well-maintained sites, many of which are equipped with 30-amp power hookups to accommodate modern RV needs. While the park maintains a rustic charm, visitors have access to essential facilities including pit toilets, a sani-dump station, and fresh water taps. Key features include:
- Paved boat launch for non-gasoline powered watercraft.
- Sandy beach and designated swimming area for summer recreation.
- A variety of playgrounds for families traveling with children.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw here, with several activities available throughout the seasons. Rainbow trout fishing is a top priority for many visitors, as the lake is regularly stocked and features multiple fishing piers. Other activities include:
- Groomed cross-country ski trails and summer hiking paths.
- Birdwatching along the major boreal forest migration routes.
- Exploring the historic grain elevators and local museum in nearby Spirit River.
The region serves as a quiet alternative to busier mountain parks, offering uninterrupted views of the stars and Northern Lights on clear nights.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal match for family campers seeking a safe, self-contained environment where children can roam the beach and playground areas. It is also a haven for avid anglers who appreciate the convenience of a stocked lake just steps from their RV. If your travel style leans toward quiet reflection and nature photography rather than high-octane resort activities, Moonshine Lake provides the perfect backdrop. Its combination of powered sites and natural beauty makes it a reliable choice for both seasoned RVers and those looking for a simple, scenic escape.

We were completely alone in this park on a weekday and enjoyed the silence and nature. Great place for a family holiday.

Tent camped there on 7/6/2023. First, you have to book online, cell service in the campground isn't that great. Sites were big, showers were clean and nice. However quite a haul to go to a place to eat, went to Rycroft 42km/26mi.

I have been camping here for over 30 years. The park has went up and down over the years. This year I am sad to say that the playgrounds around the lake have been removed. Out of the multiple playgrounds there is only 1 left. It is still fun for kids as fishing is good, and it is paved for nice bike riding. There was lots of firewood which is included in the price. The showers were free to use. Power is now included in all the sites. I would still visit this local park, but hopefully some of the items are replaced like playgrounds and skating rink.

**Had to come back and edit my review from last year. Very disappointed to visit Another Provincial park this summer on a long weekend for there to be NO FIREWOOD. The included firewood is part of what people are paying for at these parks. Not cool Alberta Parks. Beautiful spot! Fishing, trails, playground, day-use... Can't wait to camp here next month for Father's day! Unfortunately it's another place where people have decided to leave trash strewn about. Picked up abandoned take-out containers, empty cans, bits of plastic, and more. Please follow Leave No Trace. Take your garbage with you. Leave only footprints, take only pictures.

Nice trails for walking and biking. Well kept sites and decent beach with playground and sheltered picnic table areas.
