Morro Strand State Beach

Overview

Morro Strand State Beach is a premier coastal destination situated on the scenic Central Coast of California. This state park provides a rare opportunity to camp right alongside the Pacific Ocean, offering visitors a rugged and refreshing escape from the hustle of daily life. It is widely recognized for its unparalleled views of Morro Rock and its miles of sandy shoreline. Whether you are looking for a peaceful weekend retreat or a strategic stop along the iconic Highway 1, this park serves as an authentic base for coastal exploration and relaxation.

Location & Surroundings

The park is perfectly positioned between the charming seaside towns of Morro Bay and Cayucos, offering a blend of seclusion and convenience. Travelers can enjoy the constant melody of crashing waves and the cool mist of the California Central Coast sea breeze. To the south, the massive volcanic plug of Morro Rock dominates the horizon, while to the north, the coastline stretches toward the rolling hills of San Simeon. The sensitive coastal dunes surrounding the campsites provide a protected habitat for local flora and fauna, making the area feel remarkably wild and untouched.

Amenities & Park Features

While the atmosphere is primarily rustic and focused on the outdoors, the park accommodates modern travelers with several sites offering electric and water hookups. All visitors have access to essential facilities, including clean restrooms and outdoor rinse-off showers for sandy feet. Each campsite is equipped with a fire ring and picnic table, allowing for traditional campfire evenings under a clear coastal sky. While individual sewer hookups are not available, a communal dump station is provided on-site to support the needs of self-contained RVers.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the immediate shoreline, guests are just a short drive from the vibrant Morro Bay Embarcadero, where you can find fresh seafood markets and waterfront dining. Nature enthusiasts often explore the nearby estuary for kayaking or visit the world-renowned Hearst Castle to the north. The beach itself is a playground for surfing, fishing, and kite flying, with wide sandy areas that rarely feel crowded. Birdwatchers will also find the area rewarding, as it is a frequent nesting ground for the western snowy plover and other unique coastal species.

Who This Park Is Best For

Morro Strand State Beach is an ideal match for RVers who prioritize immediate beach access and a natural environment over commercial resort amenities. It is a wonderful choice for families who want to spend their days playing in the surf and their nights listening to the tide. Outdoor photographers and nature lovers will find endless inspiration in the dramatic sunsets and the coastal light that changes throughout the day. If you appreciate the simplicity of a state park setting and the raw beauty of the Pacific, this campground offers an unforgettable experience.

Stayed here for one night on our way down the coast. Beach access and restrooms without showers. You do have access to the showers at the other State Park in town. This place was convenient to a bike trail that took us to the harbor. Hookups worked, no issues.

This is the place to be if you want easy beach access. Walk the path and you're there. It is as close as you can get. If you're in a hotel or Air BnB, you're paying $$ and aren't as close. For the price, okay restrooms, and basically a parking lot - I give it a 5-star because it's cheap and no place is closer. No problems with anyone there. There are fire rings and picnic tables. No showers. There were TONS of sand dollars everywhere. Before the sun set, there were people up and down the beach watching in silence... Will never forget.

A great beach side state park. Lots of lots. We had one night with full hookups and one night with no power or water. With was fine. The beach, tide pools and tidal creek were really appealing. This place is known for sand dollars which can be collected if they're dead.

Morro Strand Campground is a great spot if you want to camp right next to the beach with easy access to solid surf fishing. Being able to walk straight from your campsite to the sand is a huge plus, and it is an ideal base for fishing, beach walks, and enjoying the coast. I knocked one star off because the bathrooms are not great and there are no showers, which can be tough if you are staying more than a night or two. Still, for location and beach access alone, it is a very solid campground and one I would happily return to.

The photo is slightly deceiving, because you can't actually see the ocean from the campground because of some small sand dunes. It's easy to get to the beach on the paths, though, and you can hear it. We've stayed in nicer campgrounds, but being on the beach is really nice. The staff were friendly, bathrooms are decently clean, just aging and needing a little work. All in all, we plan to return. There's a nice dog beach just north, within walking distance. No fire pits at full hookup sites.
