Morton Lake

Overview

Morton Lake Provincial Park offers a tranquil retreat deep within the heart of Vancouver Island's lush forests. Located just a short drive from Campbell River, this park provides a true lakeside wilderness experience that contrasts sharply with busy commercial resorts. It is a place where the sounds of the forest and the gentle lap of the water take center stage, offering travelers a chance to reconnect with nature in a pristine environment.

Location & Surroundings

Situated approximately 27 kilometers northwest of Campbell River, the journey to the park involves traveling along a gravel logging road, adding to the sense of adventure. The park is nestled between Morton Lake and the larger Mohun Lake, surrounded by a dense canopy of Douglas fir and western hemlock. This secluded location ensures a quiet atmosphere away from highway noise, making it a hidden gem for those exploring the Sayward Forest area.

Amenities & Park Features

As a rustic provincial park, the facilities are designed to maintain the natural landscape. You will find vehicle-accessible campsites equipped with picnic tables and fire rings. While there are no electrical hookups or pressurized water, the park provides pit toilets and a hand pump for water. The sandy swimming beach and small boat launch are the primary features, catering to visitors who enjoy spending their days on the clear, calm waters.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

This park is a gateway to the famous Sayward Forest Canoe Route, a multi-day paddling circuit that connects several local lakes. Anglers frequently visit to catch rainbow and cutthroat trout, while hikers can explore the trail connecting Morton Lake to Mohun Lake. Beyond the park, the city of Campbell River is nearby for those looking to experience world-class salmon fishing or whale watching tours before returning to their quiet campsite.

Who This Park Is Best For

Morton Lake is ideal for RVers who prefer boondocking-style camping and self-sufficiency over luxury amenities. It is a favorite for families seeking a safe swimming area and outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize paddling and fishing. If you travel in a smaller rig or a truck camper and crave a serene digital detox amidst the beauty of British Columbia, this park is the perfect fit for your Vancouver Island itinerary.

If you want to relax in peacefull nature, pure nature, stay here for at least two nights. Private beach to the lake from most of campsites makee it more exciting. I stayed three nights, Muhan lake next yo this is also good option for boaters, specially Muhan Island inside lake, perfect.

Lost a star due to roads. As of Jun 2021 the road was full of shot rocks and deep ruts and potholes full of shot rock make sure you have a spare or 2. Rustic as there is no power or running water. No cell signal. Just nature. Fishing can be good depending on time of year and weather. Getting a site here is very difficult due to its popularity and driving out for a non reservable site is not really worth it incase there is nothing available.

Been coming here since I was a child. It hasn't changed much, aside from all the garbage you can see sitting on the bottom of the lake....shame. I really wish people were more respectful of the outdoors.

The lake is small with mostly a muddy bottom. The beach access, from those sites that have it, is restricted. It's a good spot for paddleboarding. The road in is mostly potholes. But, it is quiet, clean, and bug-free, and the much larger Mohun Lake is in the same location, so you are not limited to the one lake.

This was a great spot to camp, aside from the road in. By the time I got to the campsite, my 2 door Honda Civic and some clanging going on underneath, but if you have an SUV or a truck, you will have no problem getting there. The campsite itself was quite great with a few spots right on the water. I had no idea where to pay, and there was no park operator when I was there, so I didn’t end up paying. The beach area was quite nice too. Lost the one star due to the car damage, but other than that, GO!
