Mount San Jacinto/Idyllwild
Overview
Mount San Jacinto State Park offers a quintessential alpine escape in the heart of the San Jacinto Mountains. Situated at an elevation of over 5,400 feet, this park provides a refreshing contrast to the Southern California deserts located just a short drive away. Visitors are greeted by towering ponderosa pines and majestic granite peaks, creating a serene environment for those looking to reconnect with nature in a historic state park setting that feels worlds away from the city.
Location & Surroundings
Located just a short walk or drive from the charming mountain village of Idyllwild, CA, the park is surrounded by the San Bernardino National Forest. The air here is crisp and scented with cedar and pine, offering a true mile-high experience. The rugged landscape is defined by steep ridges and unique rock formations, making it one of the most scenic high-altitude destinations for travelers in the region who appreciate mountain vistas and dense woodlands.
Amenities & Park Features
The park features two main developed areas: the Idyllwild Campground and the Stone Creek Campground. RV travelers will find developed campsites with electric and water hookups specifically at the Idyllwild Campground, though space is limited for larger rigs. Facilities include picnic tables, fire rings, and coin-operated showers. It is important to note that many sites are best suited for smaller trailers and camper vans rather than massive motorhomes due to the natural terrain.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts can access over 30 miles of hiking trails, including routes that connect to the famous Pacific Crest Trail. For those seeking breathtaking views, a trek toward Tahquitz Peak is a must. The nearby town of Idyllwild offers a unique cultural experience with its local art galleries, boutique shops, and cozy restaurants, providing a perfect blend of wilderness exploration and small-town charm for a well-rounded trip.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for active adventurers and hikers who prioritize direct trail access and natural beauty over luxury resort amenities. It is a perfect fit for solo travelers, couples, or families with smaller RVs or camper vans who enjoy a rustic, forest-heavy atmosphere. If you appreciate cool mountain breezes and a slower pace of life, this state park is an excellent Southern California retreat.

The homes near Idylwild are moderately difficult. Helps to take water and plan on taking breaks if you are not used to strenuous hikes. The views are exceptional

Excellent hiking trails. So beautiful when you get to the top of the mountain.

Okay, some basics. Mt San Jacinto State Park is huge and actually a wilderness rather than a typical Park. The place where the Palm Springs tram drops you off is up near the peak, far far from 25905 CA-243, Idyllwild-Pine Cove, CA 92549. The ranger here said there's no road to get there, you have to tram or do a steep 7 mile one way hike. This Google Map location should actually be called the CAMPGROUND for this "California State Park" as that's all that's here. The huge trees and restrooms are nice tho.

I loved the atmosphere of this campground with its incredibly tall trees. I only gave it a 4 star because many of the tent sites were badly eroded as well as the parking places for them. Electric sites are available however it appeared that the only site w/ water hook up was the handicap site next to the rest room.

Really beautiful in autumn. There are multiple easy trails/loops that would be manageable for small children. However, not the best for disabled people as the way down from the visitor center is steep and may be difficult to go up and down.
