Mountaineer Campground

Overview

Mountaineer Campground provides a traditional camping experience on the banks of the Little River. Established as a family-friendly destination, this park emphasizes the natural beauty of East Tennessee. Visitors can enjoy shaded RV sites that offer a reprieve from the summer heat while listening to the gentle flow of the water nearby. It serves as a peaceful basecamp for those wanting to explore the Great Smoky Mountains without the heavy traffic found in neighboring tourist hubs. The atmosphere is relaxed, making it a reliable choice for a classic mountain getaway.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the scenic town of Townsend, often called the Quiet Side of the Smokies, the park offers a slower pace of life. The surrounding landscape is dominated by lush forests and the clear waters of the Little River, which runs directly alongside the property. This location provides easy access to the less-crowded entrances of the national park, allowing guests to transition from a tranquil morning at camp to a mountain adventure in minutes. The park is surrounded by majestic trees that provide privacy and natural beauty.

Clean bathhouses and laundry facilities round out the amenities, providing a well-maintained environment for travelers seeking convenience in a rustic setting. The property also features easy access for tubing and fishing directly from the site.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

I had a great stay at Montaneer Campground. Everything was perfect — clean, quiet, and very welcoming. I truly enjoyed my time there and would gladly come back.

We had a very good time at the Mountaineer Campground. The grounds were nice, and very well maintained. The bathrooms/bathhouse was always clean. The variety of games and family atmosphere made our experience all the more enjoyable. The staff was very friendly and professional. Our family will definitely be coming back to stay again and again. Thank you Mountaineer Campground Team for making our camping in the Smokey Mountains experience enjoyable, pleasant, and memorable!

This our first time at Mountaineer and we’ll definitely return. The sites are level and well maintained and being RV folks, we appreciate the full hook ups, cable, and wi-fi. The sites are tight; that is, you’re close to your neighbors but that wasn’t a problem. Bath/showers were clean and well maintained. The host couple - Randy and Laquita - were friendly, courteous, and helpful. The location is phenomenal - right on the park boundary, good restaurant close by, grocery store 5 minutes away. The world famous “Burger Meister” is right next to Mountaineer.

Camped here over the summer with my wife and kids. We all had a great time. Our site was clean, spacious and right next to the river. The restrooms were well maintained and the a/c was welcoming. The kids took advantage of the pool and the river all weekend. They've mentioned several times they miss it. Will stay again. Oh! And I forgot to pick up a sticker before we left and they are mailing me one to add to my collection! Goes to show they actually care.

I wanted to give a Huge shout out to the campground and hosts that helped my mother and I on September 29 2025. We stayed at a campground in the park without showers. After stopping at a few campgrounds looking to Pay to use showers with very negative interactions we ended up here. Immediately the lady at the desk was chipper and very nice and professional. That inviting smile was a relief. We paid 15 dollars to use the showers that included a dip in the pool if we wanted. The showers/bathrooms were dated but very clean and tidy with some nice air conditioning. They were the cleanest and best smelling campground bathrooms I’d ever been in. After cleaning up we actually got to sit outside with the hosts for a bit and chat. It was so nice to destress and Enjoy some great people who clearly love what they do after the last few stops being so surprisingly mean. If you have a camper, these spots might be on the small side but worth it with the great hospitality you will receive.
