Mouth of Two Hearted River

Overview

The Mouth of Two Hearted River State Forest Campground offers a serene escape into the wild landscapes of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Located at the precise point where the legendary river empties into Lake Superior, this facility is celebrated for its rugged beauty and peaceful atmosphere. It is a primitive camping destination that prioritizes a deep connection with nature over modern luxuries. RVers visiting this area should arrive prepared for a quiet, off-the-grid experience surrounded by towering pines and the rhythmic sound of the lake’s waves hitting the shore.

Location & Surroundings

Situated approximately 35 miles north of Newberry, the park sits on a unique strip of land nestled between the river and the Great Lake. The surroundings are characterized by sandy dunes and dense coniferous forests, providing a profound sense of seclusion. Travelers typically arrive via a mix of paved and well-maintained gravel roads, making the journey feel like a true northern adventure. The Lake Superior shoreline here is famous for its colorful stones and driftwood, offering expansive, unobstructed views of the horizon.

Amenities & Park Features

As a state forest campground, the amenities are designed for simplicity and self-sufficiency. There are no electric, water, or sewer hookups available, so boondocking capabilities are essential for RV travelers. The park provides vault toilets and hand-pumped potable water for basic needs. Each site is equipped with a fire ring and a picnic table. One of the most iconic park features is the swinging bridge, which allows visitors to cross the river on foot to access the beach and the river mouth.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the heart of the experience at this location. The area is a premier destination for trout and salmon fishing within the river's cold currents. Hikers can easily access portions of the North Country National Scenic Trail, which winds through the nearby woods and along the coast. For those willing to explore further, the majestic Tahquamenon Falls and the historic Crisp Point Lighthouse are accessible day trips. Many visitors spend their hours beachcombing for Lake Superior agates along the rocky water’s edge.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for travelers seeking a wilderness experience rather than a traditional, high-activity RV resort. It is best suited for small to mid-sized RVs, truck campers, or van lifers who enjoy dry camping and complete solitude. Because the campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis, it appeals to flexible travelers who appreciate spontaneity. If you are looking to disconnect from digital life and immerse yourself in the natural landscape of the Upper Peninsula, this rustic gem is an excellent choice.

Absolutely loved it. Tried to find it a few years ago. Was too late in the season for my car to make it there. Hubby drove me up to it this time. Lake Superior never disappoints me. It is a long way back to the camp grounds. Totally worth the drive.

#Absolutely one of our best places to visit in the UP . There are plenty of spacious sites to fit most smaller rigs, 30 feet or less comfortably. Whether you hike, bike, paddle, pick rocks, or just enjoy the beach... This is a great place!

One of the best campgrounds I've been to. If you're into rockhounding this beach will keep you busy for hours. Great sunsets and amazing views of the night sky.

Have been coming here since I was a kid, it hasn’t lost its beauty or magic. I’m so glad I got to bring my whole family, they really enjoyed it and loved the scenery, and Gitchee Gumee. Definitely somewhere everyone should experience at least once in your life, when you do, you will long to return.

One of the best campsites I’ve ever experienced. Direct access to the river and sunset views. Almost always a breeze to keep the bugs away. Private no campsite on one side. 15 miles of dirt roads to get there (with a teardrop camper). Vault toilets and water pump. No electric.
