Mt Baker-Snoqualmie/Bedal

Overview

Bedal Campground offers a primitive and immersive escape within the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. Located along the scenic Mountain Loop Highway, this site provides a classic Pacific Northwest camping experience for those seeking peace and quiet. Travelers will find a secluded atmosphere shaded by towering old-growth trees and the soothing sounds of the nearby Sauk River. It is a destination where the focus remains on connecting with nature rather than modern technology.

Location & Surroundings

Situated near the confluence of the North Fork Sauk and Sauk Rivers, the park is deeply nestled in the Cascade Mountains. The surrounding terrain is rugged and lush, characterized by moss-covered forest floors and dense cedar canopies. Granite Falls serves as the nearest gateway town, but once you arrive at Bedal, you are truly in the wilderness. The scenic Mountain Loop Highway provides a breathtaking drive with numerous overlooks and river access points just minutes from the campground entrance.

Amenities & Park Features

As a rustic forest service site, Bedal focuses on simplicity. The campground provides basic facilities to ensure a comfortable but natural stay. It is important to note there are no hookups, making it ideal for self-contained RVs or those prepared for dry camping. Amenities include:

  • Large sites with individual picnic tables and fire rings.
  • Access to shared vault toilets maintained by the forest service.
  • Proximity to the river for easy fishing or wading access.

Visitors should bring their own potable water and be prepared for a complete lack of cell service in this remote mountain canyon.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find endless opportunities for exploration just steps from their site. The area is a hub for hiking trails, including the popular Goat Lake and North Fork Sauk trails. Fishing is a major draw, as the Sauk River is known for its pristine fly-fishing conditions and crystal-clear water. For those who prefer a slower pace, the Monte Cristo Ghost Town is a fascinating historical site reachable via a nearby trail, offering a glimpse into the region’s mining past.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is best suited for off-grid adventurers who value solitude over resort-style amenities. It is an excellent choice for RVers with smaller rigs or van-lifers who enjoy boondocking-style camping in a managed forest setting. Families looking to unplug and hikers wanting a basecamp for Cascade peak bagging will find this location perfect. If you seek a quiet, natural retreat without the distractions of the modern world, Bedal is a premier choice.

Fantastic place to hike or camp in, especially if you want less crowding than the neighboring National Park. I hiked to a fire lookout on the edge of the forest and got to see two bears. Be prepared and always bring bear spray when hiking and familiarize yourself with bear safety.

Mt. Baker–Snoqualmie National Forest felt like a true escape into untouched nature. The moment I entered the forest, the fresh mountain air, towering evergreens, and dramatic views instantly slowed everything down. Whether driving along scenic roads, stopping near rivers and waterfalls, or walking quiet trails, every part of the forest felt peaceful and awe-inspiring. The contrast of snow-capped peaks with lush green valleys is absolutely stunning, and it never feels overcrowded. It’s the kind of place where you can disconnect, breathe deeply, and genuinely appreciate the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. A perfect destination for anyone who loves nature, photography, or simply being surrounded by calm and wilderness.

The Verlot Visitors Center is staffed by wonderful, helpful administrators and Rangers. The gift shop has a variety of both national parks and indigenous art and crafts items available at affordable prices. Hiking guides, wildlife and vegetation pamphlets and books, and friendly suggestions are abundant. I love this area and can't wait to return for further explorations of the many trails.
