Mt Baker-Snoqualmie/Douglas Fir

Overview

Douglas Fir Campground offers a serene, rustic escape within the breathtaking Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. Located along the scenic banks of the North Fork Nooksack River, this campground serves as a primary gateway to the high alpine wonders of the North Cascades. It provides a quintessential Pacific Northwest experience where towering evergreens and the constant, soothing sound of rushing water create a restorative atmosphere for travelers seeking a deep, unplugged connection with the natural world.

Location & Surroundings

Situated east of Deming along the iconic Mount Baker Highway, the park is deeply enveloped by an ancient forest of Douglas fir, western hemlock, and massive western red cedars. The geography is dominated by the North Fork Nooksack River, which borders the campground and provides a dramatic, turquoise-tinted backdrop to many of the campsites. The surrounding terrain is rugged and mountainous, offering a cool, shaded sanctuary that remains temperate even during the peak of the summer season.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a traditional forest service facility, which means it prioritizes the integrity of the environment over modern luxuries. RVers should note there are no hookups available, making the park most suitable for self-contained rigs or those who enjoy the simplicity of dry camping. The park features vault toilets and hand-pumped potable water stations located throughout the loops. Each individual campsite is thoughtfully integrated into the forest, featuring a heavy-duty picnic table and a fire ring for evening gatherings under the dense canopy.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Adventure seekers will appreciate the immediate access to the Horseshoe Bend Trail, a stunning path that winds along the river cliffs directly from the campground. A short, scenic drive further up the highway leads to the Mount Baker Ski Area and the legendary Artist Point, which offers some of the most accessible panoramic mountain views in Washington State. The river itself is a popular spot for fishing and seasonal whitewater rafting, while the nearby community of Glacier provides local eateries and supplies.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is a premier choice for nature enthusiasts and RV travelers who prefer a quiet, primitive setting over the amenities of a commercial resort. Due to the winding roads and the dense forest layout, the park is best suited for small to mid-sized RVs, truck campers, and van lifers. It is the perfect destination for those looking to disconnect from digital life and establish a peaceful home base for exploring the wilder reaches of the North Cascades.

We loved camping here. I think it was our third time here. We were sad that Ron, the host was not still there but Ed the new host also did an amazing job.

Douglas Fir Campground $32/34p/n. No cell coverage. Camp host Ed is a perfect host, everything is super clean and well maintained- I was impressed to find he checks out every site after a guest departs to make sure it’s in perfect order)… Site:28 Private, spacious, potable water 30’ away, vault toilets, two campsites away. Firepits with grills. Site: 19 Possibly the largest site -and on the river with easy access to it. Currently playing salamander on the banks of the North Fork Nooksack River. The only thing that could make this morning more perfect is if a river otter had swung by to wash my back. We had intended to stay only one night on our way to the north cascades and between the camp host (a great camp host is worth their weight in gold-if you want to know why he is great, go meet him and see his work) and the campground we’re likely to stay another three. In case of inclement weather you can enjoy the picnic area with its spacious gazebo (covered picnic table(s) and fireplace. PS: the three bunnies you may be likely to spot are a mom and her two babes (mom was dropped off approximately Spring 2024 and pregnant- they survived the winter, are pleasantly plump and friendly as of this review. Please DON’T FEED them. Someone wanted to feed it Yams and chickpeas. Carrots aren’t good for them either! If you can’t help yourself- at least research what bunny rabbits can digest before you lose cell coverage about 20min away in Glacier. As for those who would prefer to give them a home…consider this is their natural home and the mom and her children are thriving here - please don’t separate them. I too love rescuing animals and humans - but only when it’s clear they need / want rescuers.

Stayed eight nights here in pitches 3, 12, 14 and 21. A mix of riverside and forest and all were good. We moved around a lot as we kept extending our stay and the host, Ed (recently took over from the previous host who became ill), was super helpful in finding us somewhere to move to. He even let us borrow two chairs as we didn’t have any. He really made the stay extra special with his kindness. The campground is close to the visitor centre, and Glacier for supplies. There are so many great hiking routes nearby as well. I’m sure we will be back

We really enjoyed our time here and the campsite was great! But im just reaching out because we left a beloved stuffy behind at campsite 21. Maybe someone found a little wolf. we camped there on August 17th and left on the 18th. It may have been left under the picnic table.

This campground is set up perfectly for car camping: flat tent sites, fire pit with grill and picnic table at each site. Sites not too close together. A handful of bathrooms (pit toilets) which are kept clean and tidy. There's a covered eating space with a fireplace if one wants a fire in there----this was a salvation for me this past week with all the rain and staying in a tent. The location is great next to the river and loads of hiking in the area. And, Ron, the camp host, is friendly, helpful and clearly enjoys his job hosting the campground.
