Overview

McNeil Campground offers an authentic mountain experience tucked away in the Mt. Hood National Forest. Located near the community of Rhododendron, this site provides a serene backdrop for those looking to disconnect from the digital world. Unlike commercial resorts, this area emphasizes the natural beauty of Oregon, providing a quiet retreat where the primary soundtrack is the rustling of Douglas firs and the nearby river. It serves as a premier gateway to some of the most iconic landscapes in the Pacific Northwest.

Location & Surroundings

The campground is situated along the banks of the Sandy River, offering a lush, forested environment typical of the Cascade Range. The proximity to the river provides a cooling effect during the summer months and a peaceful atmosphere year-round. Surrounded by ancient old-growth trees, the individual sites feel private and secluded. Its location near the base of Mt. Hood ensures that visitors are never far from dramatic alpine views and the crisp, clean mountain air that the region is famous for.

Amenities & Park Features

As a rustic Forest Service facility, amenities at McNeil are focused on the essentials. Travelers will find well-maintained picnic tables and fire rings at each site to facilitate traditional outdoor living. The park features vault toilets and typically provides access to hand-pumped drinking water during the peak season. Because there are no electrical or sewer hookups, it is a top destination for those who enjoy dry camping and have the equipment to remain self-sufficient while staying deep in the woods.

This is a real hidden gem. Beautiful forest and surrounded area. The sound of the Sandy River can be heard all night from any campsite.

The camp host Elizabeth was horrible felt like I was being harassed! Constantly coming by to our site I will never camp here again! Her generator was also obnoxiously loud! I could not believe how rude she was!

The campsite was cozy and peaceful but Elizabeth, while extremely polite, could probably stand to be a little less forward with the guests. Multiple times she made us uncomfortable and we had to ask her to leave. Also the restrooms are outhouse style for anyone who might be stopping by it’s a beautiful site I would stay here again!

Amazing! We stumbled on this campground by mistake. We were trying to find a campground but they were full or closed. So we stopped at the Ranger station which was also closed but looked at the maps outside.,We saw 3 that were close by and you did not have to have a reservation. So we went to McNeil a campground. This was a a Friday night and we found a perfect spot. The campground does not take resetvations. First come first serve. There is not a bad spot in the campground. It's $19 a night. They have a outhouse style bathrooms. That are kept clean. We. Met the Campground Representives. Eric and Vanessa are amazing. They take pride in there work, and go above and beyond to make your stay, feel like home. There boss should be very proud of them.

Very basic campground with pit toilets, no showers or drinking water. For some reason the forest is dying here so it's pretty ugly. No on site hosts so it can be noisy during quiet hours. Much better campground down the road a little ways.
