Mt Hood/Oak Fork

Overview

Oak Fork Campground provides a classic Pacific Northwest experience situated on the serene southern shore of Timothy Lake. Managed within the Mt. Hood National Forest, this destination offers a peaceful escape for RVers who prefer a natural, rustic setting over a traditional resort. The park is characterized by its towering Douglas firs and western red cedars, creating a lush canopy that ensures a sense of privacy and immersion in the Oregon wilderness.

Location & Surroundings

Located just south of Government Camp, OR, the campground sits at an elevation of roughly 3,200 feet. The surrounding landscape is part of the vast Mt. Hood National Forest, providing cool mountain air and a dense forest environment. While the campground is tucked away from the main highway, it remains accessible for those looking to explore the high cascades. The shoreline of Timothy Lake is just steps away, offering picturesque waterfront views and a tranquil atmosphere away from urban noise.

Amenities & Park Features

As a forest service facility, the amenities at Oak Fork focus on the essentials of dry camping. The park features potable water and vault toilets located conveniently throughout the loops. Each site is furnished with a heavy-duty picnic table and a fire ring for evening gatherings. While there are no electrical or sewer hookups, many sites offer paved or leveled gravel spurs designed to accommodate various RV lengths. A boat ramp is located nearby, providing easy access for those traveling with non-motorized watercraft.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Recreation is the heartbeat of this region. Travelers can enjoy the Timothy Lake Trail, a 13-mile loop perfect for hiking, mountain biking, or horseback riding. The lake itself is restricted to non-motorized or low-speed boats, making it a sanctuary for kayaking and paddleboarding. A short drive north leads to the historic Timberline Lodge, where visitors can experience high-alpine scenery and year-round snow, while the village of Government Camp offers local dining and mountain culture.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for self-contained RV travelers who value tranquility and outdoor recreation over modern luxuries. It is a fantastic fit for families wanting to unplug and spend their days on the water or for hikers looking for a basecamp near the Pacific Crest Trail. If you enjoy the simplicity of boondocking in a pristine forest environment with immediate lake access, Oak Fork is a premier choice for your Oregon itinerary.

Super clean campground! Perfect for a weekend of camping with the family. There is well water just a walk away and bathrooms close by. Your close to Dexter lake for easy swimming and fun on the water. There is a boat ramp close but its a hike to parking so easier to drive to Dexter for the day. The park hosts are awesome and friendly! I would suggest camping here! 10 out of 10

It was a beautiful beautiful campground. But just know that there are no showers here. We were filthy but we had a ball. The bathrooms were super clean but they're not your usual bathrooms their vault toilets and they were kept up nicely no trash or anything. But the campgrounds are so nice and so clean. The water was so clean and we went on a weekend we thought it'd be hot but it was actually kind of cool we still got in the water and it was a lot of fun. We were just impressed with the fact that it was clean and the staff was super nice to us and very helpful.

Great campground. The area is very beautiful. My wife and I stayed at a "hike-in" campsite, which is a 5 min walking from the parking lot. They have reserved parking spots for those staying at these campsites. They are spacious and and in a very beautiful area between the trees. There were vault restrooms available and they were very clean. The entire campsite is very well taken care of by the hosts. I would recommend staying here. Timothy Lake is very beautiful and it is great to spend a few days.

Visiting from out of state. We hiked-in, camped here for 2 nights and it was such a pleasant experience. The hosts were friendly and helpful. They have little carts to wheel in your stuff to the campsite, one could borrow. I would definitely recommend. The facilities were extremely clean. It shows that the hosts take great pride in the work. Our campsite was also clean.

AMAZING! I’ve wanted to camp in a different part of Oregon from where we usually go. This campground had only one spot available. So I didn’t pick it because it was too choose. But it is now my very fave! The lake and grounds are so clean and clear! I didn’t get to meet both hosts, but met the bearded, younger guy and he was super nice and very helpful. We didn’t want to leave!!
