Mt Hood/Rock Creek Reservoir

Overview

Rock Creek Reservoir offers a serene escape within the Mt. Hood National Forest near Tygh Valley. This destination is defined by its lush ponderosa pine forest and the shimmering 100-acre reservoir at its center. Unlike bustling commercial resorts, this area provides a tranquil atmosphere where the sounds of nature take center stage, making it a favorite for those looking to disconnect and enjoy the Oregon wilderness in its most authentic form.

Location & Surroundings

Situated at an elevation of approximately 2,200 feet, the park sits in a unique transition zone where the dry landscapes of Central Oregon meet the moist forest ecosystems of the Cascades. The surrounding terrain is characterized by rolling hills and dense groves of oak and pine. The reservoir itself is the focal point, providing a refreshing oasis during the warm summer months while offering stunning views of the surrounding timberland and local wildlife.

Amenities & Park Features

As a rustic Forest Service site, the campground offers a traditional outdoor experience. While you will not find full hookups, the park provides spacious back-in sites suitable for many RVs and trailers. Essential facilities include:

  • Hand-pumped potable water available during the peak season
  • Well-maintained vault toilets located conveniently throughout the loops
  • An accessible boat ramp for non-motorized watercraft

These features support a comfortable but rugged stay for those prepared for dry camping in the forest.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Recreation revolves around the water, with the reservoir being stocked with rainbow trout regularly throughout the spring and summer. Anglers and paddleboarders enjoy the electric-motors-only policy which preserves the peace. Beyond the water, the historic Barlow Road section of the Oregon Trail is nearby for history enthusiasts. Additionally, the stunning White River Falls State Park is just a short drive away, offering dramatic views of tiered waterfalls and abandoned hydroelectric ruins.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is ideal for self-contained RVers who prioritize natural scenery and solitude over modern luxuries. It is a perfect fit for families looking for a classic lakeside camping experience and birdwatchers hoping to spot local eagles or ospreys. If you enjoy dry camping in a pristine forest setting where you can launch a kayak right from the shore, this Tygh Valley gem is an excellent choice for your next adventure.

Paid online in advance only to arrive and get cornered by the camp hosts, asking for more money, claiming that the website only has the ability to charge for one car, so when you show up with two, you have to pay cash. As if there's an ATM in the forest. Pretty place. It has running water and bathrooms.
