Mt Hood/Trillium Lake

Overview

Trillium Lake Campground is perhaps one of the most photographed locations in the Pacific Northwest. Situated at the base of Oregon’s highest peak, this Forest Service facility offers a quintessential alpine camping experience for RV travelers. While it lacks the luxuries of a modern resort, the opportunity to wake up to a mirrored reflection of Mt. Hood on the water makes it a bucket-list destination for those seeking natural beauty and a peaceful atmosphere.

Location & Surroundings

Located just south of Government Camp, OR, the park sits at an elevation of approximately 3,600 feet within the Mount Hood National Forest. The surroundings are dominated by dense Douglas fir and hemlock forests that create a secluded, woodland atmosphere. The centerpiece is the 63-acre Trillium Lake, which serves as a tranquil hub for the campground. Its proximity to the Mount Hood Scenic Byway makes it an accessible yet immersive mountain escape.

Amenities & Park Features

As a rustic forest destination, the park does not provide electricity, water, or sewer hookups. RVers should arrive prepared for dry camping with full tanks and sufficient power. The sites offer paved spurs, though lengths vary, so checking site dimensions is vital for larger rigs. On-site amenities include accessible vault toilets and seasonal drinking water. Each site is equipped with a heavy-duty picnic table and a fire ring for traditional evening campfires under the stars.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the water; the lake is closed to motorized boats, ensuring a peaceful environment for kayaking and paddleboarding. The two-mile Trillium Lake Loop Trail provides an easy, scenic hike suitable for most fitness levels and provides various angles of the mountain. Just a short drive away, visitors can explore the historic Timberline Lodge or enjoy the mountain biking trails and alpine slides found in the nearby village of Government Camp.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for self-contained RVers who prioritize scenery and outdoor recreation over modern park conveniences. It is a haven for nature photographers and paddlers looking for easy lake access and a quiet environment. If you enjoy a dark-sky environment and do not mind a more primitive setup, Trillium Lake offers one of the most iconic mountain backdrops available in any Oregon campground.

Went here in early November and couldn't even see Mt. Hood due to fog. Still absolutely gorgeous. You need decent ground clearance to get to this lake if there is a lot of snow accumulation. Very quiet.

Gorgeous view of Mount Hood from all around the lake. The water wasn’t too cold in July and a lot of folks were out in the water on their paddle boards, rafts, tubes and kayaks. It was very busy on a Sunday morning. Get there before 11am! Nice narrow beach (at the Dam Parking area) surrounded a large portion of the lake and there are outdoor facilities nearby. Good views every time you look up. Everyone was happy and friendly.

Had an amazing day at Trillium Lake. The views of Mt. Hood are gorgeous! The main trail is an easy walk but also has some more moderate trails that branch off the main. There was paddle boarding and kayaking on the lake. The site is dog friendly. Definitely a must see if visiting Portland or if your looking good for an outdoor adventure.

Wonderful place with amazing views for a hike that’s fits all family. A walk around the lake with stunning views is about 1-1.5 hours easy walk on a comfortable route. You can also rent boats, have a picnic along the route and just sit and enjoy the view.

So pretty. It got pretty busy in the afternoon through to early evening when I left, and I went on a Tuesday, but I imagine so many people were visiting because it was sunny, slightly breezy, gorgeous views, clean and well kept trails and campgrounds, and perfect temperature. I was disappointed I didn’t catch any trout after hours of trying, but other people did, so it must be something I’m doing/ not doing. The lake was smaller than I was expecting, but plenty big enough to row around in my kayak for hours along with dozens of other nature/water enthusiasts. And there were tons and tons of cool salamanders there. Everywhere in the water. First time I’ve seen them. So cute! If you’re not looking for something private/secluded, this is a must visit spot to spend an hour or two, or camp overnight. Will be back!!! Note: don’t let the perfect weather fool you! Use sunblock 🫣
