Mud Lake Park (Dubuque County Park)

Overview

Mud Lake Park offers a tranquil getaway just a short drive from the historic city of Dubuque. Managed by Dubuque County Conservation, this park serves as a prime destination for those seeking an authentic riverfront experience without sacrificing local accessibility. It successfully combines the rugged beauty of the Mississippi River valley with well-maintained facilities suitable for various camping styles, ranging from primitive tents to mid-sized motorhomes and travel trailers.

Location & Surroundings

Situated approximately six miles north of Dubuque, the park is nestled along the scenic banks of Mississippi River Pool 11. The geography is defined by the towering limestone bluffs characteristic of the region, providing a secluded and peaceful atmosphere for every visitor. Its proximity to the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge makes it a vital scenic corridor for those who appreciate river ecology and undisturbed natural landscapes during their stay.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground provides numerous electrical hookup sites that accommodate modern RVs. Guests enjoy access to a modern shower house and clean restroom facilities, which are essential for comfort during multi-day trips. For water enthusiasts, the park features a high-quality boat launch and public docks, making it incredibly easy to spend a full day navigating the river channels. Additional features include a large playground for families, picnic shelters for gatherings, and a convenient on-site dump station.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Visitors are perfectly positioned to explore the cultural and historical riches of the surrounding region. A short drive leads to the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium, where history and aquatic life intersect in downtown Dubuque. For those who enjoy hiking, the nearby Mines of Spain Recreation Area offers extensive trails through prairie and woodland, while a trip to the historic Fenelon Place Elevator provides unmatched panoramic views of the tri-state area.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is ideal for travelers who prioritize boating and fishing as the centerpiece of their RV lifestyle. It appeals strongly to nature lovers who prefer the quiet, community-focused vibe of a county park over a high-traffic commercial resort. Modest state park with a playground and boat ramp. There is a restaurant and bar located nearby as well. It is called Mud Lake for a reason and the area can be swampy at times. Camping here is still fun even with the mud. There are also music festivals and other public activities planned here from time to time.

I was looking to go on a trail, but there are no hiking/walking trails by Mud Lake. The lake also appeared a little dirty. I haven't had a chance to visit the restaurant/bar, but I will be back .

Great campground! We love to go with our family and friends. Fishing available from the shore, boat ramp, and a playground. We enjoy watching the eagles there too. Perfect place for families to enjoy.
