Muncho Lake

Overview

Muncho Lake is often cited as one of the most stunning stops along the historic Alaska Highway in British Columbia. Known for its distinct jade-green waters, the lake sits within a massive provincial park that offers a mix of rustic camping and more developed RV facilities. Travelers often stop here to rest while making the long trek north, finding themselves captivated by the sheer beauty of the Northern Rockies and the deep, cold waters of the lake itself.

Location & Surroundings

Situated at Mile 462, the park is nestled in a deep valley surrounded by the towering peaks of the Terminal Range. The lake's unique color is caused by rock flour leaching from the surrounding limestone mountains. This area is part of the Muskwa-Kechika Management Area, providing a truly remote wilderness experience where the mountains meet the water's edge in a dramatic display of natural geology and pristine forest.

Amenities & Park Features

RVers can choose between the rustic charm of provincial campgrounds like MacDonald Campground or the full-service hookups found at local private lodges. Most sites are designed to accommodate big rigs and offer easy access to the water. Essential features include boat launches, community fire pits, and picnic areas. While cellular service is limited in this remote stretch of BC, the park compensates with unrivaled mountain views and a peaceful atmosphere free from urban noise.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The lake is a premier destination for lake trout fishing and mountain boating. Visitors frequently spot Stone sheep licking mineral deposits along the highway or wandering near the rocky cliffs. Just a short drive north, travelers can soak in the famous Liard River Hot Springs, making Muncho Lake an ideal base camp for exploring the geological wonders and thermal features of the northern interior of British Columbia.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is perfect for adventure-seeking RVers who prioritize scenery over modern city amenities. It is a must-visit for those navigating the long route to Alaska who need a scenic and refreshing break from the road. Wildlife enthusiasts and photographers will find endless subjects here, while those looking for a quiet wilderness retreat will appreciate the chance to disconnect and enjoy the fresh mountain air.

Loved staying at this place! I have driven the Alaska highway three times and stayed here every time. The cabins are clean and well maintained, the lodge is beautiful, and the price is very fair for RV stays. Lots to do and see in the area including the hotsprings which are less than an hour away. Do not miss!!

Well I'm not one to normally leave reviews but I am seriously disappointed. We stayed at the main lodge for our stay, which is minimum $230 CAD per night, and we couldn't check in until 3, so we had a few hours to kill, we were going to do a hike but there ONLY 2 HIKES and they both looked really sub-par, so we asked instead if we could use the sauna, but since it's heated by fire and there was a fire band and we couldn't use it. Then we thought about renting a kayak or canoe, nope, can't do thay either. So then we just sat chatted in the lodge, our coffee and tea was complimentary, but they were always out of coffee and had zero hot water for us to use, so we had to ask for it every time we wanted some. Okay now the good stuff, when we finally got checked in, the room had no fridge, no internal phone and no ac, which we lived with by cracking a balcony door and put our stuff outside. We could get away with that now that it's fall, but what about summer? Anyways, time for supper. You could EITHER get take out (regular burger type stuff) OR spend $70 per person for a 3 course meal, THERE IS NO OTHER OPTION. So we did the 3 course meals, again my impression was pretty poor, my beef was dry and gristly, the veggies were overcooked and soggy, and the soup was SUPER spicy, which they never told us. When dessert came, I was more hopeful, but the brownie was way too sweet and the ice cream wasn't even a good quality ice cream. When we got back to the room to go to sleep, the pillows were really lumpy, like REALLY lumpy, and every time we moved around, the bed squeeked and it sounded like a plastic cover underneath thr sheets, so my husband and I both woke up EVERY time someone moved. Did I mention it was also $230 per night? We won't be staying again. How do you not have a lounge for your guests? How do you not have a gift shop to peruse around? How to you not have more hiking trails developed after 30 years? How do you not have canoes and kayaks to rent? Complimentary breakfast? Nope, breakfast not included. Oh and I forgot to add, we heard the kithing cleaning up dishes until 11 pm, and first thing at 6 am. There goes your sleep in time.

A little pricey food wise but man’s it was gourmet. The rooms were great, very comfortable. We only stayed one night to escape camping in the rain. but it was worth it. You get a discount on fuel if you stay.

The beds were clean and comfortable and staff were polite…however a few things fell short. Each bed had 3 pillows rather than 4, there was no microwave or kettle in my cabin and food orders end at 9ish so if u roll in late or have your own food it’s very inconvenient. You can access the lodge canteen but it’s limited and the lighting on the property is very poor making the walk over there a very very dark walk. There was no plunger…and a member of our group required one. And the internet was awful and would not work 95% of the time. Soo overall a decent place to sleep when you need a bed…but not the most comfortable place for the price.

Stunningly gorgeous! Lots of fun activities. There’s hiking trails, hot water springs, kayaks, canoe and motor boat rentals, fishing, float plane rides. You can stay in the main lodge, rent a cabin or bring your own RV. There’s even winter activities like ice skating and viewing the northern lights since the sky is so dark there. I passed on the hot water springs because it smells very strongly of sulfur and may stain your suit. Since mine was brand new I passed. That said, my two complaints would be no air conditioning but you can ask for a fan (I brought my own) and the breakfast was stupidly expensive at $26 for food that was no better than the free continental breakfasts I got at the 3 previous hotels in Canada. But the views are unsurpassable and the staff very pleasant. I ordered dinner for my room (since the earliest I could book dinner in the dining room wasn’t until 7:45pm) and was told to come back in 20 minutes to pick up my food. Ten minutes later the front desk gal was knocking on my door saying she didn’t want to just leave it sitting there getting cold since it got done early. Thank you!
