Munuscong River
Overview
The Munuscong River State Forest Campground offers a serene, back-to-basics escape for travelers seeking to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Located near Pickford, this destination is renowned for its peaceful atmosphere and direct access to one of the region's most productive waterways. Unlike modern resorts with paved pads, this campground provides a rustic camping experience that honors the tradition of the great outdoors. With 50 sites available on a first-come, first-served basis, it serves as a quiet sanctuary for those looking to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with nature.
Location & Surroundings
Situated along the banks of the Munuscong River and just a short distance from the expansive Munuscong Bay, the park is nestled within a landscape of vibrant wetlands and dense forests. The surrounding area is part of the St. Marys River system, making it a critical habitat for diverse wildlife and migratory birds. Visitors often find themselves surrounded by the sights and sounds of the marsh, where the expansive river views create a sense of isolation and tranquility. The terrain is relatively flat, making it accessible for various RV sizes, though the roads maintain a natural, unpaved charm.
Amenities & Park Features
As a state forest facility, the amenities here are designed to facilitate an off-grid experience rather than provide luxury comforts. The park features vault toilets and potable water provided by a traditional hand pump, ensuring that your basic needs are met while maintaining a low environmental footprint. One of the most significant features of the park is the on-site boat launch, which provides easy access for anglers and kayakers to reach the river and the bay. Each site typically includes a fire ring and a picnic table, encouraging long evenings spent around a campfire under the stars.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw for visitors is the world-class fishing, particularly for walleye, yellow perch, and muskie in the nearby bay. For those who enjoy exploring on land, the surrounding state forest land offers ample opportunities for hiking and wildlife photography. A short drive away, the city of Sault Ste. Marie allows visitors to witness the engineering marvel of the Soo Locks or explore local maritime museums. During the autumn months, the area becomes a popular hub for waterfowl hunting, as the marshes attract large populations of ducks and geese.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal match for self-contained RVers who enjoy boondocking or dry camping without the need for electricity or sewer hookups. It is a true paradise for outdoor sportsmen and nature enthusiasts who prioritize proximity to water and wildlife over commercial amenities. If you prefer the sound of wind through the trees over the hum of air conditioners, the Munuscong River area provides the perfect setting for a quiet, contemplative retreat. It is best suited for those who travel with their own supplies and appreciate a slower pace of life.

This was a diamond in the middle of no where. Fantastic sites..large & grassy. The toilets were ok, I’ve seen worse but I’ve seen better. The decent river sites were all taken..I’m pretty sure they would be tough to get. But all the other spots were nice too. I can not stress enough to take lots of bug repellents. We used a therma-cell & it honestly helped tremendously. We wouldn’t have been able to deal with the mosquitoes w/o it.

Primitive campground, vault toilets and a pitcher pump well. Riverside camping available. On site boat launch and riverside fishing area at the end of the riverside camp sites.
