It is said you get what you pay for and at $25 a night you don't get much, it is run down and the restrooms on site are out houses. There is only electricity at the sight. There is a RV water fill station at the beach house and a dump station at the MER office parking lot. there is bathrooms, showers and laundry at the MER office, this is also the place you check in, about a mile from the campsite.

Nice location on the water. That's the only good thing I can say. It's full of fulltimers that live here permanently, one guy said he's been here 2 years. The fulltimers have the water view. Electric only, water and dump about a mile down the road. Grounds are unkept and dog feces all over even though there dog stations around. Sadly it looks like base command doesn't care about the campground.

Park has a ton of potential. However, staff has no pride of ownership and no work ethic. Watched an electrician fix a 20amp outlet and he left his trash on the ground when he was done. Simple RV Campground stuck out on the beach of Lake Michigan at the Great Lakes Naval Trng Station. You would think that a base dedicated to instilling pride in it's recruits would find it easy to care for this small 20 spot FamCamp. 20 electric only sites. No water, no sewer. They are both available but 1/2 mile from the park and they aren't in the same location and the dump station is difficult for big rig access. It would be easy to solve by adding sew/wat to the sites. Access is pretty easy but the road in the park is gravel and not cared for. Potholes galore. Big rigs beware. Also, each site suffers from lake affect issues. Meaning, when it rains a lake is formed in front of your rig. All of these are easily solved with #1 asphalt or #2 a grater from time to time. All that said, this is a beautiful location with tons to do. Which is why it got a 3 rating. It just needs some TLC from the NAF staff that "should" keep it "spit and polished" like the recruiters who are trained here. Come on, show the military personnel, veterans and civilians who visit your base and enjoy your grounds some pride in ownership. Come on Great Lakes...show us how it's done!

The view of Lake Michigan is great! Making the reservation was simple. The camping spots are level. That is the good points. The spots are a bit on the small side, sadly only electric hookups, no water or dump. It still is a great place to stay, just that it could be a lot better. We have been to many FamCamps and this one is pretty much in the middle, many nicer, but many worser.

Cramped spots that are all full with full timers who never leave . Mostly active duty folks. We reserved a spot and when we got there were told the computer was down so we could not stay until they fixed it. Took two days and we left before then. Quiet on base and close to everything. Just wish it wasn't full of permanent campers.

I was not expecting much as the reviews were very bad, but I like to save my opinion to experience things for myself. Which I did, and here are my thoughts. 1. Full time campers with their sites full of junk. *see photos. One guy even had an inflatable hot tub, which I could not figure out where he got the water from as all the sites are without water and sewer. 2. Pit toilets were nasty dirty and not cleaned once during our stay. 3. Campsites so cramped you could hear water running in the next RV. 4. One full timer had his black/gray tank hose emptying into and open home depot bucket. 5. Showers are dirty and in another building a mile away. 6. Lets not forget the loop road! Pot holes as big as a crater. Third world countries have better roads than this. This Naval Station is absolutely gorgeous. Chock full of historic buildings and so well preserved. It was utterly shocking to see this gem of a base have such a poorly maintained and embarrassing campground. The view from camping was stunning and should be capitalized on. The CO should be ashamed for not overseeing better management.

Pros: beautiful view of the lake from just 50 feet away. The beach looks great. There is electricity, but that's it. The slab is level. Cons: The flies and mosquitos are insane and in unforgiving numbers. The dump station is nearly a mile away. The beach is closed for swimming or even walking in the water during the week. The beach house is dirty/moldy (but works). The water fill station and playground for kids is half a mile away. This place could be a hidden gem for RV travelers. It is so close to the lake and the lake view is amazing. Not being allowed to swim sucked and the Navy students seem to use the area as a make out spot so you may catch a few camouflaged lives making out. Even at $20 a night the inconveniences seen to diminish the value to the customer. The mosquitos were constant and the flies relentless. Options for food on base include McDonalds, Panda Express, Dunkin, Subway. It worked for our one and only visit to Chicago, and I'm glad we were away each day visiting the city. Overall... One and done. Really missed the mark.

Great little campsite. Plenty of room to easily back into spot. Electric only but water and sewer dump station are close. You can't get much closer to Lake Michigan.
