Nancy Lake/South Rolly Lake

RV Park

Overview

Overview

Nancy Lake State Recreation Area, including the South Rolly Lake campground, offers a quintessential Alaskan outdoor experience. This park is managed by the State of Alaska and provides a rustic, nature-focused retreat for travelers looking to disconnect. The area is defined by its pristine boreal forest and glacial lakes, making it a serene destination for those who prefer the quiet beauty of the wilderness over the bustle of a commercial RV park.

Location & Surroundings

Situated near Willow, Alaska, this recreation area is conveniently located along the Parks Highway, approximately 67 miles north of Anchorage. The setting is deeply immersed in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough landscape, surrounded by dense spruce and birch trees. The geography is characterized by rolling terrain and numerous interconnected waterways, offering a dramatic backdrop of Alaskan scenery that remains easily accessible for travelers heading further north toward Denali.

Amenities & Park Features

The South Rolly Lake campground is designed for a traditional camping experience rather than full-service luxury. Visitors will find spacious campsites suitable for RVs and trailers, though it is important to note that full hookups are not provided. The facility features essential amenities such as fire rings, picnic tables, and well-maintained vault toilets. Potable water is available seasonally, and the park’s primary focus is providing direct lake access for recreation.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activities in the immediate vicinity. South Rolly Lake is a popular spot for non-motorized boating, including canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Anglers frequently visit the area to fish for rainbow trout and Arctic char. Additionally, the park features a network of hiking trails, such as the Red Shirt Lake trail, which allow visitors to explore the diverse flora and fauna of the Nancy Lake region.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for self-contained RV travelers who prioritize peace and quiet over modern resort amenities. If you enjoy boondocking or dry camping in a natural, forested setting, South Rolly Lake is a perfect fit. It is particularly well-suited for families, anglers, and photography enthusiasts who want to experience the authentic, rugged charm of Alaska without straying too far from the main highway corridor.

It was super fabulous! From finding a RV space to renting a canoe, all went well. Payment is on a CC kiosk & was very easy. My family enjoyed our time there.

Clean campground and bathrooms. However, the weeds were grown up around the log posts on either side of the campsite and we backed into one of them because we didn’t know it was there. Also, there was loud music and yelling until after midnight on Saturday night. Apparently no one was enforcing the quiet time curfew.

Wow, what a beautiful place! We stayed for a few nights and the weather was great. The watercraft rental building Tippy canoe just opened a self-serving kiosk that is just perfect for any lake activities. Its definitely a gem of a campsite. Like others have said, mosquitoes were bad but not anything crazy. Bring bug spray, thermacells, bug zappers- you'll be fine. So many birds and animals! So peaceful.

Great campground about 1.5 hour drive from Anchorage. There’s a fee station early on the road on the way in, but you don’t have to stop and pay there. Go in, find a camp site first, then pay at the station near the sites. Nearly all sites are first come first serve. It looked like the only exception was a handicapped spot, but it was not clear how you would reserve it. The site labels on the map do not match the label’s physically on the sites, weird but not an issue. Plenty of access points to the lake including a wooden dock. Great spot for hanging out on a lake and it was warm enough with the sun out for swimming.
