Nancy Lake/South Rolly Lake
Overview
Nancy Lake State Recreation Area offers a unique Alaskan experience at the South Rolly Lake Campground. Unlike the rugged peaks of the Alaska Range, this area is defined by a gentle, lake-studded landscape that provides a peaceful setting for RVers looking to immerse themselves in nature. The campground is situated at the end of the Nancy Lake Parkway, ensuring a quiet atmosphere far from highway noise, where the call of the loon is the most common sound you will hear.
Location & Surroundings
Located near the community of Willow, AK, the park is easily accessible via the Parks Highway at mile 67.3. The surrounding terrain consists of boreal forests and a vast network of over 130 lakes and ponds. This low-lying region provides a different perspective of the Alaskan wilderness, characterized by lush wetlands and tranquil waters. The scenic drive along the parkway sets the tone for a relaxing stay amidst the thick birch and spruce trees that dominate the landscape.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional state park facility, the campground offers 98 primitive campsites designed for travelers who appreciate simplicity and a natural environment. Each site includes a sturdy picnic table and a fire ring for evening campfires. While there are no electricity or water hookups available, visitors have access to hand-pumped well water and well-maintained vault toilets. A convenient boat launch is located within the park, providing easy access for those bringing their own watercraft to explore the lake.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw of this destination is the water. South Rolly Lake is a quiet lake, perfect for canoeing and kayaking because gasoline-powered motors are prohibited, ensuring a glass-like surface for paddlers. Anglers frequently visit to test their luck fishing for stocked rainbow trout. For those who prefer exploring on foot, the nearby Red Shirt Lake Trail offers a wonderful hike through the woods. The town of Willow is also just a short drive away, serving as a famous hub for dog mushing history.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for travelers seeking a serene, rustic retreat rather than a luxury resort experience. It is best suited for medium-sized RVs and camper vans that are fully self-contained and ready for dry camping. If you enjoy paddling and fishing in a quiet, motor-free environment, South Rolly Lake is a perfect fit. It appeals to those who value natural beauty, wildlife viewing, and the genuine sounds of the Alaskan wilderness over modern digital amenities.

My family comes here every summer and we have a blast this place is great!

Great campground about 1.5 hour drive from Anchorage. There’s a fee station early on the road on the way in, but you don’t have to stop and pay there. Go in, find a camp site first, then pay at the station near the sites. Nearly all sites are first come first serve. It looked like the only exception was a handicapped spot, but it was not clear how you would reserve it. The site labels on the map do not match the label’s physically on the sites, weird but not an issue. Plenty of access points to the lake including a wooden dock. Great spot for hanging out on a lake and it was warm enough with the sun out for swimming.

Fantastic campground - parking is spaced out, lake location is great and everything was well-maintained. Highly recommended!

96-98 clean camping spots, but the prime spots are by the lake or over looking the lake in the middle. There is a host onsite that can get you firewood on the spot. A canoe rental is onsite as well (picture below for time and prices). Pike fishing near the dock and on sunny days the lake is a welcome respite from the heat. Getting to South Rolly from the road takes about 15-20 minutes. There are all sorts of trails, little ponds and places to explore for the nature enthusiasts.
