Nantahala/Horse Cove
Overview
Nantahala/Horse Cove offers a tranquil retreat tucked away in the dense forests of Western North Carolina. Located near the small community of Tapoco, this campground serves as a primary gateway to the rugged beauty of the Nantahala National Forest. It is a place where the sounds of the city are replaced by the rustle of ancient hardwoods and the gentle flow of nearby mountain streams. This destination provides a truly secluded camping experience for travelers looking to disconnect and immerse themselves in the Appalachian wilderness.
Location & Surroundings
The park is situated in a high-elevation cove surrounded by steep ridgelines and lush vegetation. Its proximity to Tapoco, NC, places it right at the edge of the world-famous Tail of the Dragon, a legendary stretch of road for motorists. The surrounding landscape is defined by the Cheoah River and the nearby Lake Santeetlah, offering an emerald-green backdrop that remains significantly cooler than the lowlands during the peak of summer. The environment is wild, quiet, and deeply forested.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional forest service destination, the park focuses on preserving the natural landscape rather than providing modern luxuries. Visitors will find well-defined gravel pads designed to accommodate smaller RVs and camper vans. The sites include essential features like heavy-duty fire rings and sturdy picnic tables for outdoor dining. While the park leans toward a primitive style without electricity or water hookups, the availability of vault toilets and potable water access ensures a manageable stay for self-contained travelers who enjoy dry camping.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activities within a short drive of the cove. The Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest is just minutes away, featuring some of the oldest and largest trees in the Eastern United States. For thrill-seekers, the Tail of the Dragon offers 318 curves in just 11 miles, while the Cheoah River provides world-class whitewater paddling during scheduled release days. Fishing, kayaking, and hiking the nearby Appalachian Trail access points are also popular pastimes for those staying in this region.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for adventurous RVers who prioritize scenery and silence over resort-style amenities. It is a perfect fit for motorcycle enthusiasts looking for a basecamp near the mountain passes or hikers wanting direct access to scenic wilderness trails. If you prefer a rustic environment where the primary entertainment is a crackling campfire and a starlit sky, Horse Cove will feel like a hidden sanctuary. It is best suited for those in smaller rigs or vans who are comfortable without hookups.

Beautiful campsites here. The upper loop is closed due to a water leak but the lower loop along the river is still open (I'm sure most people want to camp along the river anyways). This is first come first serve so come early to get a good site. Fees are 15$ a night now.

It’s a beautiful spot offered on a first come first serve basis. The location is amazing, but the campsites are pretty close. The bathroom is also broken and there is no running water. Might be an issue for some, but was fine for me.

We camped in a roadside spot. It was clean and had a short trail to the creek. Be careful we pulled several ticks off each other. There was also a copperhead on the path to the creek.

Firepits, picnic bench, and gear hook/polls at every location. Most of the spots are right next to each other along the river. A few other, more secluded, spots are nearby too.

Great place to camp if you can get in. There are tent sites as well as RV/Pull behinds as well. We did not camp here but was on our way through adventuring and had to stop to see the sights.
