National Park Service - Delaware River - Alosa - Campsites # R1-R6

Overview

The Alosa campsites, designated as R1 through R6, are situated within the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area near East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. These sites offer a unique, primitive camping experience managed by the National Park Service. Designed primarily for those arriving by watercraft, these campsites provide a rustic retreat for adventurers looking to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the Delaware River landscape without the distractions of modern commercial amenities.

Location & Surroundings

Located along the pristine banks of the Delaware River, these sites place visitors in the heart of the Delaware Water Gap. The surroundings are defined by dramatic river scenery and lush, wooded terrain that transitions with the seasons. Accessing this location requires careful planning, as these sites are specifically established as paddle-in campsites, ensuring a peaceful and secluded environment away from the noise and traffic of traditional roadside campgrounds.

Amenities & Park Features

As these sites are part of the National Park Service's wilderness offerings, they focus on low-impact camping. Visitors will find minimal facilities, typically consisting of a designated area for tents and basic fire rings. Because there are no traditional utility hookups, guests must be prepared to follow Leave No Trace principles. The focus here remains entirely on the surrounding environment, providing a simple, quiet base for those traveling along the river corridor.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw of the Alosa campsites is the river itself. Kayaking, canoeing, and fishing are the most popular activities, allowing travelers to explore the scenic Delaware River at their own pace. Beyond the water, the surrounding National Recreation Area offers miles of hiking trails that lead to panoramic mountain views. Whether you are interested in bird watching or historical exploration of the area’s geologic history, the nearby landscape offers endless opportunities for quiet discovery.

Who This Park Is Best For

These campsites are perfect for experienced paddlers and outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize seclusion and nature over comfort. If you are an RVer, please note that this is not a traditional RV park; it is a destination for those who enjoy boat-based travel or backcountry-style camping. It is an ideal choice for individuals or small groups seeking a rugged escape to disconnect from technology and reconnect with the wild river environment.

Some of the nicest camp sites along this stretch of the river. They are part of the National Park and do require advanced reservations. This is definitely worth doing because at the end of a long adventurous day on the river fighting to find a campsite on the New Jersey side is not what I look forward to. There are only 6 sites which keeps the partying down to a minimum. There are also port-potties which are generally clean.
