Navajo Lake/Cottonwood

Overview

Navajo Lake State Park features the serene Cottonwood Campground, a destination known for its lush vegetation and proximity to the water. Situated just downstream from the Navajo Dam, this park offers a peaceful escape defined by mature cottonwood trees that provide ample shade. It serves as a premier gateway for those wanting to explore the unique intersection of New Mexico’s high desert and its fertile river valleys, providing a quiet atmosphere that contrasts with the more active lake-side areas.

Location & Surroundings

Tucked away in the canyon lands of Navajo Dam, NM, the surroundings are marked by striking sandstone cliffs and the winding path of the San Juan River. The area feels secluded and quiet, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the natural landscape. The riparian environment creates a vibrant ecosystem where the cool river breeze often tempers the warmth of the southwestern sun, providing a comfortable climate for RVers parked beneath the canopy.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground provides a comfortable yet rustic experience, offering spacious RV sites equipped with electrical hookups to accommodate various rig sizes. Visitors have access to clean vault toilets and convenient water stations located throughout the loops. Each site includes a picnic table and a fire ring, perfect for evening gatherings. A central dump station is available on-site, ensuring that the essential needs of self-contained travelers are met efficiently without requiring a long drive.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The main attraction is undoubtedly the world-class fly fishing on the San Juan River, particularly the designated Quality Waters section located just steps away. For water sports enthusiasts, the main body of Navajo Lake offers opportunities for power boating and kayaking along its many miles of shoreline and hidden coves. Hikers can enjoy various trails that offer panoramic views of the dam and the rugged, colorful terrain that defines northern New Mexico.

Nice park to visit. Many little spots to picnic lunch, take in a view or go fishing. Lots of fishing. Lake was beautiful.

Big fish and good guides. Fishing with a guide makes a lot of difference if you are not familiar with the stream. All catch and release below dam for a couple miles or so. River is a bit more crowded than I like but biggest trout of my life makes me think it's ok to be in company .. got witnessed..

By far, one of the best lakes in NM. Great fishing (bass, trout, and salmon +. Fantastic for boating, jet skis, tubing, and water skiing.

This is a beautiful State Park. Registration and reservations ahead highly recommended. In the upper main Park at Dam lake area you can rent house boats, fishing is also available with a license. License can be purchased for week ,season or dau use. Very reasonable price $ 28.00 for out of state 5 days. Really enjoyed this campground gravel packed sites. I'd only recommend 40 ft or smaller rigs ,ours is 40 ft and we stayed at Cottonwood campground sites. We could pull into pull-thru but had to back out of site. The main State Park sites areas were way to small area for our comfort. Make sure you have Water in your takes, dump before you arrive, dump after on way out. Forgot a grocery item the little store next to Sportman bar has essential food items, the Sportman bar makes a great burger. You can buy your fishing license with CASH at the Fish and Float shop...
