Newaygo

Overview

Newaygo State Park offers a peaceful retreat centered around the expansive Hardy Dam Pond. Located on the high embankments of the Muskegon River, this park provides a true rustic camping experience within a lush hardwood forest. It is a favored destination for those looking to trade modern distractions for scenic river views and a genuine connection with the Michigan outdoors in a serene, natural environment.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated in the heart of West Michigan, roughly six miles northeast of the city of Newaygo. The surrounding landscape is defined by the Muskegon River and the massive Hardy Dam, which creates a reservoir spanning thousands of surface acres. Visitors will find themselves immersed in a dense forest canopy that provides excellent shade and privacy throughout the wooded terrain and rolling hills.

Amenities & Park Features

This is primarily a rustic campground, meaning sites do not offer electrical hookups or modern plumbing at the individual pads. However, the park features 99 spacious sites equipped with fire rings and picnic tables. Practical facilities include vault toilets and hand pumps for drinking water. For recreation, the park offers a popular 18-hole disc golf course and a paved boat launch for deep-water access.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

A major draw for modern adventurers is the Dragon Trail, a premier mountain biking system that circles the water. The nearby Muskegon River is renowned for its world-class salmon and steelhead fishing, as well as leisurely summer tubing trips. Additionally, the proximity to the Manistee National Forest provides endless opportunities for hiking, bird watching, and exploring the diverse local wildlife found in this region.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for boondockers and traditional campers who prefer a quiet environment over a resort-style atmosphere. Because of the limited amenities, it attracts serious outdoor enthusiasts, including anglers and mountain bikers looking for direct trail access. It is a perfect fit for travelers who enjoy self-contained RVing and want to spend their evenings watching the sunset over the water rather than near city lights.

Great campground. It's rustic so don't expect hook ups, but they have water fill up and dump station. The sites are large and more private than most state parks. They keep the pit toilets pretty clean. Love the disc golf course. Will definitely be back

I came here to camp Friday and Saturday. Nice place to camp. #19 Oak camp site is decent sized, we pitched two tents. We lucked out with decent campers behind our campsite. Pretty quite. The vault toilets are decent. I'd come here again to get away from Grand Rapids for the weekend.

Newaygo State Park is a fantastic place to go camping. There is a nice disc golf course, through the woods. There is a boat launch to the Hardy Dam pond. There is also a connection to the Dragon MTB trail.

Very beautiful and quiet. Fast mountain bikers on the dragon trail near the dam- beware. Very friendly campers all around- felt like family. This was a wonderful campground and we'll be back soon!

Small camping space but the spot is just right for a group of 2-4 people. The playground was a huge hit with my son. Nice trails to walk. Also nearby stores that have all the essentials. We loved it. Definitely coming back.
