No Highland American Legion/Clear Lake

Overview

Located within the vast expanse of the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest, the Clear Lake Campground in Woodruff, Wisconsin, offers a quintessential Northwoods experience. This destination is celebrated for its deep, spring-fed waters and the serene atmosphere provided by the surrounding forest. Unlike modern commercial resorts, this park focuses on preserving the natural integrity of the landscape, providing travelers with a peaceful retreat where the sound of wind through the pines and the call of loons define the environment. It is widely considered one of the premier rustic camping spots in the state.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated just a short drive from the communities of Woodruff and Minocqua, providing a perfect balance between seclusion and convenience. The Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest encompasses hundreds of thousands of acres, meaning the campground is part of a massive, protected ecosystem. The topography is defined by glacial features, resulting in the incredibly clear water of Clear Lake itself. The shoreline is heavily wooded, ensuring that the natural scenery remains uninterrupted, offering a true sense of escape from the urban grind.

Amenities & Park Features

This campground is designed for those who appreciate a traditional outdoor lifestyle. The facility features spacious, wooded campsites that provide excellent privacy and shade. While the park maintains a rustic vibe, it offers vital amenities including several hand pumps for pressurized drinking water and clean vault toilets throughout the grounds. Water enthusiasts will appreciate the sandy swimming beach and the well-maintained boat launch, which makes it easy to bring your own kayak or motorized boat to explore the lake's crystal-clear depths.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Activity revolves around the water and the woods. The nearby Raven Nature Trail offers miles of diverse paths for hikers and cyclists, winding through unique forest types and past hidden bogs. Fishing is a top-tier activity here, as Clear Lake is known for being a productive spot for musky, walleye, and bass. For those seeking local culture, the Minocqua area is just minutes away, offering wildlife parks, local lumberjack shows, and unique Northwoods dining experiences that complement the quiet nights back at the campground.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is the ideal choice for nature-focused RVers who prefer a primitive, authentic experience over high-density resorts. It is perfect for families who want to spend their days swimming and fishing in a clean, safe environment. If your travel style involves disconnecting from technology to reconnect with the outdoors, the quiet hours and dark skies of Clear Lake will suit you perfectly. Quiet, very clean and well maintained campground! The lake is crystal clear making it a great place to swim. The bathhouse is nice I just wish it was closer to the lake.

The lake/beach is very nice. The trails are so so. The sites are generally on the small side and uneven. There is a shower house and generators are allowed 10 to 5. It's near Minocqua and a Walmart.

Great campground. Showers are so/so and the reason I gave 4 stars. There's a nice hiking/bike path around the lake. The beach is usually busy on the weekends.

We went for a night and we were pretty much happy campers . We were in good area . Bathrooms were clean , the whole campground is in really good shape . The beach is busy but well maintained for all the people . Fishing was not good . A lot of little animals around but they don’t bother you at all. Overall I would go again there with the rest of the family.

Had a great time camping out at the Clear Lake campground. Definitely will come back. They clean their showers daily and bathrooms regularly as well. Everyone was super friendly. Had a great lil site that fit our camper and had a couple of perfect trees for our hammocks. The amount of shade at the sites is perfect to keep you cool on those hot summer days.
