No Highland American Legion/Crystal-Muskie Lakes
Overview
The North Highland American Legion State Forest offers a quintessential Wisconsin Northwoods experience, particularly at the Crystal and Muskie Lake campgrounds. These neighboring sites are among the most beloved in the region, providing a serene escape into dense pine and hardwood forests. Managed by the state, these campgrounds offer a rustic yet clean environment that prioritizes the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape over modern resort luxuries. It is a place where the scent of pine needles and the sound of the wind through the trees set the stage for a peaceful getaway.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just north of Woodruff and Minocqua, these campgrounds are nestled within the vast Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest. The area is defined by its glacial heritage, resulting in a landscape dotted with hundreds of kettle lakes and rolling terrain. Crystal Lake is famous for its remarkably clear water and white sand beaches, while Muskie Lake offers a more intimate, wooded shoreline. The surrounding forest provides a massive buffer from the outside world, ensuring that visitors feel fully immersed in the Vilas County wilderness.
Amenities & Park Features
As state forest campgrounds, the focus here is on the outdoor experience. While you won't find full hookups, the park provides essential facilities including accessible shower buildings and flush toilets. Many of the sites at Crystal Lake feature paved camping pads, making them suitable for various RV sizes, though larger rigs should check dimensions carefully. Guests have access to a sanitary dump station and fresh water filling stations. The highlight for many is the expansive sandy beach at Crystal Lake, which features a designated swimming area and nearby picnic facilities.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for visitors to this region. The Crystal Lake Paved Bicycle Trail connects the campground to nearby towns, offering miles of scenic cycling through the forest. Anglers will find excellent opportunities for catching panfish, bass, and muskellunge in the numerous local lakes. For a taste of local culture, the nearby communities of Woodruff and Minocqua offer the Fred Scheer’s Lumberjack Show and unique shopping opportunities. Nature lovers can also explore the Fallison Lake Nature Trail for a hike through diverse forest habitats.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for travelers who appreciate traditional dry camping and want to be steps away from some of the clearest water in the Midwest. It is perfect for families who enjoy spending their days at the beach or cycling through the woods. Because the sites lack electric and water hookups, it is best suited for self-contained RVers or those who do not mind a more primitive setup. If you are looking for a quiet, nature-focused retreat rather than a commercial resort atmosphere, these campgrounds will exceed your expectations.

I've always liked this part of Wisconsin. There is so much to see and do if you like nature, camping, fishing, and hiking. Tent camping at North Trout lake was special. Also Clear Lake. Canoeing experience is fabulous. You really can't go wrong here as long as you are prepared. Highly recommended!

Our family has been coming to Firefly campground part of the Crystal Lake region of the Northern Highland American Legion State Forest for 35+ years. We have been here every Labor week. For the past 20 years we have experienced the same problem, and that is the campsites flood every little rain storm. I know we are not the only people to experience this. A person would figure the state would use a little bit of the revenue from the camp fees to put a little gravel in the sites to prevent this, but they are just interested in collecting the money and not putting back. I say that but probably 25 years ago they did put in a shower building here. That's about it. I just want people to know if there's a chance of rain be prepared for your site to be flooded. David

Beautiful quiet family focused campground, electric only motor lake. Alot of families with children, kayakers and canoers. Small beach with quite a few swimmers. Fishing was better then the overfished larger lake campgrounds. If a shower is needed just drive ten minutes to clear lake campgrounds to enjoy a hot shower. During our stay enjoyed alot of loon activitiy, watched them nab fish and feed them to their loonlings ( is that a word?). Caught a lot of blue gill, very small perch and few 10 inch bass. Encountered non venomous snakes and only one moron who had their phone alarm go off at 3 in the morning for what seemed like half an hour or so.

Leaves were peak yesterday 10/8/22 Being windy and watching the leaves rain across the road directly from the trees was surreal, but a sure sign the maple, birch, aspen, elm, as well as many othe deciduous trees that adorn the forrest with their color will soon be bare. We took the stone lake route, and the roads were gorgeous.
