Nolin River Lake - COE/Wax Campground

Overview

Wax Campground offers a serene escape on the shores of Nolin River Lake, one of Kentucky's premier destinations for water recreation. Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this park provides a balanced blend of natural beauty and essential comforts for the modern RVer. The campground is well-known for its lush, wooded sites that provide ample shade during the warm Kentucky summers. It serves as a peaceful retreat for those looking to disconnect from the hustle of daily life and enjoy the rhythmic sounds of the water.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Clarkson, Kentucky, the campground is nestled within the scenic Green River region. The landscape is defined by rolling hills, dense hardwood forests, and the expansive 5,795-acre lake. Its location provides a secluded atmosphere while remaining accessible to local supply runs in the nearby town. The surrounding terrain is a haven for local wildlife, offering campers frequent sightings of deer and various bird species along the rugged shoreline and limestone cliffs.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features over 110 campsites, the majority of which are equipped with water and electric hookups suitable for various RV sizes. On-site facilities include a dump station, a modern shower house, and a playground for families. Boaters will particularly appreciate the convenient boat ramp which provides direct access to the lake’s fertile fishing waters. The campground is designed to accommodate both weekend explorers and long-term travelers seeking a reliable and clean basecamp in the heart of nature.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

While the lake itself is a major draw for fishing and boating, the park is also a short drive from the world-famous Mammoth Cave National Park. Travelers can explore the intricate cave systems or hike the extensive trail networks located just 30 minutes away. Nolin Lake State Park is another nearby destination, offering a public beach and additional hiking opportunities. This region of Kentucky is perfect for those who enjoy photography, birdwatching, and exploring unique geological formations.

Who This Park Is Best For

Wax Campground is an ideal destination for water sports enthusiasts and families who enjoy a traditional, nature-focused camping experience. It appeals most to RVers who prioritize proximity to the water over resort-style luxuries or commercial attractions. Those planning a visit to Mammoth Cave will find this to be a tranquil alternative to more crowded commercial parks. It is perfectly suited for travelers who want to spend their days on the lake and their evenings around a campfire.

We camped in B loop for 7 days last week and had a great time. The park was clean and everyone we encountered was super friendly and courteous. I did notice on the second night, my circuit analyzer was showing an "Open Neutral" and my power cord was getting Hot on the 30A outlet. I was able to get in touch with one of the campground volunteers who immediately called maintenance. While I was speaking with these volunteers, my wife flagged down a different volunteer who happened to be passing by. Within about 15mins., both volunteers showed up with a 50A to 30A adapter for us to connect to the 50A outlet. This worked great and we had no other issues. The next morning maintenance showed up to verify that we were still good to go. I was extremely impressed by how quickly everyone responded and I felt that everyone was dedicated to ensuring we had a good camping trip. There is a sheriff that walks around the campground regularly and she is incredibly friendly and personable as well. They also have a small camp store that offers firewood, locally grown vegetables, preserves, and much more. I like that they have "3" Dump stations, so if you have to leave on a busy morning there is little to no wait when leaving. They offer several water front sites in A & C loop that offer amazing views. We have been sleeping on Wax, but will definitely add this to one of our regular campgrounds.

Great place to spend time away with family and friends. I've been going here for 35 years. There's camping, fishing and playground. Nice relaxing place to go. No restaurants near by in this rural county.

Loved the camp site we had directly on the water. Only hated the trucks and bobcat and employees right in front of us picking up washed up tree stumps. Their activities left a huge muddy waterfront to not only look at but to walk through to get to our kayaks!!!! It was great till then. 👎

Our favorite campground down here. The campground volunteers Charles and Bridgett are the best. They treat you like family. The rangers and sheriff are great as well! My home away from home.
