Norbury Lake
Overview
Norbury Lake Provincial Park offers a tranquil getaway in the shadow of the Steeples Mountains. It encompasses two picturesque lakes, Norbury and Peckham’s, providing a classic East Kootenay camping experience. This park is widely recognized for its stunning mountain backdrops and crystal-clear waters, making it a favorite for those seeking a quieter, more natural setting than the high-traffic resort parks often found in the region. The park’s dual-lake system provides diverse opportunities for recreation throughout the warmer months.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just south of the famous Fort Steele Heritage Town, the park is nestled within the Kootenay River valley. The surrounding landscape is dominated by the dramatic limestone peaks of the Hughes Range, creating a photogenic environment for every campsite. Travelers will find the park easily accessible via the Wardner-Fort Steele Road, offering a perfect balance of wilderness seclusion and proximity to the urban services and supplies found in nearby Cranbrook.
Amenities & Park Features
The park features 46 vehicle-accessible campsites tucked into a forest of Douglas fir and western larch. As a provincial park, it emphasizes a rustic experience. Facilities include:
- Hand-pumped well water for drinking and cooking.
- Clean pit toilets located conveniently near the loops.
- A gravel boat launch for non-power boats and canoes.
- Spacious picnic areas with fire rings.
Because there are no electrical hookups available on-site, travelers should arrive prepared. This lack of modern utility preserves the natural soundscape of the forest.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Visitors spend their days fishing for stocked rainbow trout or swimming in the refreshing waters of Peckham’s Lake. A scenic 1.5-kilometer interpretive trail loops between the two lakes, offering birdwatching opportunities and gentle terrain for hikers. Beyond the park boundaries, the Fort Steele Heritage Town provides a deep dive into 19th-century gold rush history, featuring live theater and restored vintage buildings just a short drive from your campsite.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is best suited for self-contained RVers who value natural beauty and quiet evenings over resort-style amenities. It is an excellent choice for families seeking a traditional lakeside camping trip and outdoor photographers looking to capture the Rocky Mountain Trench. If your travel style favors crackling campfires, starlit skies, and a slower pace of life, Norbury Lake Provincial Park is a must-visit Kootenay gem.

Just stopped through for the night to camp so I didn’t get a chance to explore the park much, but from what I saw it’s so incredibly beautiful. The sites are very wide open so there’s not much privacy, but the birds singing in the trees makes up for it.

What a truly beautiful place this is! With the mountains rising up out of the valley floor just like Jackson Hole in Wyoming, it is truly stunning. The lake was frozen and ever so peaceful and I'm looking forward to coming back in the summer and swimming off of the lovely dock that they have. Just 25 minutes from Cranbrook and a little piece of paradise.

The views were STUNNING, the lake itself was crystal clear and so green/blue. It was by far my favourite part of our visit to the Cranbrook area! No boats, and very easy to access with our paddle boards. We absolutely loved this spot — thanks to some locals for directing us to this gem!

I really enjoy Norbury lake. It has very clear, clean water. A nice dock for people that want to swim. Is a great lake for paddle boarding and kayaking. Can be busy on the weekends. Has a dog beach, but not much of a beach. Not much of a beach lake. Best to float on the water or use the dock.

This place is Amazingly beautiful, the mountain 🏔 above those trees as they turn yellow due to the Autumn 🍂 season Is beautiful. This place has a Mountain View and a path that leads to the lake,Ive always loved those lil rock by the lakeside but also seeing the green grass by this lakeside is Devine. The reflection of the sun directly on the lake was quite a scenic view, I wish I have the right words to describe that view. It is really peaceful here and I don’t mind kayaking on this lake at all. I met a couple of nice people who were out there with their families and it was so much fun.
