Norris Dam

Overview

Norris Dam State Park offers a unique blend of historical significance and natural beauty in the heart of East Tennessee. Established in the 1930s as part of the Tennessee Valley Authority project, this 4,000-acre park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. RVers will find a tranquil atmosphere characterized by lush forests and the massive presence of the dam itself, which created the sprawling Norris Lake. It is an ideal destination for those who appreciate the intersection of American history and outdoor recreation.

Location & Surroundings

Tucked away in Rocky Top, TN, the park is conveniently located near I-75 while feeling worlds away from the highway noise. The landscape is defined by the scenic Clinch River and the deep blue waters of Norris Lake. Visitors are surrounded by heavily wooded ridges that provide ample shade and a sense of seclusion. The proximity to the water ensures cool breezes and a vibrant display of scenic Tennessee foliage throughout the changing seasons.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features two distinct camping areas: the East and West campgrounds. Together, they provide over 70 sites equipped with water and electric hookups. Guests have access to various on-site facilities including:

  • Modern bathhouses with hot showers
  • Dedicated laundry facilities
  • Convenient dump stations
  • Sites with sewer connections in the East Campground

Each site typically includes a picnic table and a fire ring for evening campfires. The campgrounds are designed to accommodate a variety of setups, from camper vans to larger travel trailers, within a rustic, forested setting.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Adventure is never far away with over 15 miles of hiking trails ranging from easy strolls to moderate climbs. History enthusiasts should visit the Lenoir Museum Cultural Complex, which includes a 1700s grist mill and a threshing barn. For water lovers, the park offers premier trout fishing on the Clinch River and easy access to a full-service marina for boating on the expansive Norris Lake.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is best suited for outdoor enthusiasts and history buffs who prefer a quiet, nature-focused experience over a high-traffic resort. It is a fantastic choice for families looking to disconnect and enjoy traditional camping activities like hiking and fishing. Because of its peaceful, wooded environment, it also appeals to retirees and solo travelers seeking a serene stopover amidst the rolling hills of Tennessee.

Great park with hiking trails, picnic areas, cabins for rent and of course, lots of water! The visitor center was helpful for finding hiking trails and there were plenty of places to go for peace and quiet. We weren’t boating, but others were and it looked like fun.

This is a beautiful park. It has cabins to rent. The views to the lake are amazing! There is a village 30 minutes from the park called Ancient Lore Village. Must go!

Very nice park and well maintained. There's a storybook trail, a museum , a grist mill and 21 trails. The cabin we stayed in was well maintained. The park is located near many sites of interest.

This dam & the areas surrounding it are definitely worth visiting! Also while your there Check out both Museums! Ones small at the top on the left right before you go over the dams bridge! The other is at the bottom it’s bigger & definitely more informative! The guy working there was so nice & accommodating! All facilities & grounds are well maintained & kept clean!

We enjoyed this campground with all of its history. If you are camping in a bigger rig, the roads to both the east and west campgrounds are tight, winding and steep. There are some low hanging branches. The picnic shelters are super nice with flush toilets and very nice playgrounds. It does appear that there has been some delayed maintenance at the campground. The people that answer the reservation phones are SUPER nice and very helpful, especially Diana who helped us out of the issue we had.
