North Higgins Lake

Overview

North Higgins Lake State Park sits on the northern edge of one of Michigan's most beloved and pristine bodies of water. Known for its crystal-clear glacial waters and shallow sandy bottom, the park spans over 400 acres of lush hardwood and pine forest. It offers a refined balance of high-energy water sports and quiet woodland exploration, making it a cornerstone for family vacations in the heart of Northern Michigan. The park's atmosphere is one of timeless natural beauty, where the scent of pine fills the air and the lake provides a stunning backdrop for every sunset.

Location & Surroundings

Located in Roscommon, the park provides direct access to the 9,900-acre Higgins Lake, which is often cited as one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. The surrounding terrain is characterized by dense pine and oak forests, providing a secluded and shaded atmosphere even during the height of the summer season. It is strategically positioned near the intersection of I-75 and US-127, serving as an accessible and popular gateway for travelers heading toward the northern reaches of the Lower Peninsula or the Mackinac Bridge. The environment feels remote despite its proximity to major transit routes.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features 174 well-maintained campsites, many of which are equipped with 50-amp electrical service and access to modern restroom and shower facilities. RVers will appreciate the availability of level sites that accommodate various rig sizes, alongside a reliable sanitation station for easy arrivals and departures. On-site features include:

  • A spacious boat launch with multiple slips for easy water access.
  • Dedicated swimming areas featuring a sandy beach and clear, shallow water.
  • Functional playground equipment and picnic shelters for group gatherings.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Visitors can explore over eight miles of interconnected trails perfect for hiking, mountain biking, or cross-country skiing during the winter months. A unique feature of the park is the Civilian Conservation Corps Museum, which offers a fascinating look at the history of Michigan’s reforestation efforts. For those who enjoy being on the water, the park is a premier destination for lake trout and yellow perch fishing. Additionally, the historic Higgins Lake Nursery is located within the park grounds, marking the site of the first state-operated forest seedling nursery, providing an educational component to your stay.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideally suited for active families and outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize water-based recreation and educational history. It appeals strongly to RVers seeking a traditional Michigan state park experience that successfully blends modern convenience with a rustic, natural environment. If your ideal trip involves kayaking at dawn, exploring historical landmarks, or relaxing by a campfire under a thick forest canopy, North Higgins Lake State Park will perfectly fit your travel style. The park has a very nice playground for the children. There are restrooms. There's a dog friendly beach area. And there is a pavilion for picnicking. Also plenty of picnic tables scattered throughout. Nice boat launch. And camping

Good sites for group / family camping. Some hidden away as well for a quieter setting. Nice view of the lake / beach area. Pavillion area for picinic outside of camp areas. Overall, it is a beauty of a setting.

Fantastic park! The bathhouses and restrooms are well maintained and new, there's drinking water available at a few spigots and the walk to the lake is relatively short. The only drawback is that some sites back up to a main road which is rather noisy; do yourself a favor and pay attention to the site map.

Great place to go camping and boating. Family-friendly clean water. Nature trials and playgrounds. Can be hard to get a site on certain dates. Been a fav for 40 years.

South Higgins Lake State Park is a fantastic spot for a family outing, whether it’s just the two of you, the kids, or a big extended group. The park is super clean, with well-maintained restrooms and a great park store that offers rentals, ice cream, and food. There are plenty of picnic tables and charcoal grills, perfect for a cookout. Parking is easy, and the water is very shallow near the shore, making it ideal for families with small children. With activities like volleyball and lots of open space to enjoy, it’s a beautiful and relaxing place to spend the day. Highly recommend!
