North Wheeler Recreation Area
Overview
North Wheeler Recreation Area serves as a scenic gateway to the expansive waters of Lake Francis Case. Located on the eastern shore of the Missouri River, this destination is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It offers travelers a tranquil setting where the rugged South Dakota landscape meets the blue horizon of the reservoir. Known for its peaceful atmosphere, this park is a preferred stop for those who value natural beauty and direct access to one of the region's most productive fisheries.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just south of the small community of Geddes, South Dakota, the park is characterized by its rolling prairie bluffs and wide-open views. The surrounding landscape provides a sense of isolation and calm, far removed from the noise of interstate traffic. Visitors often enjoy the dramatic sunsets over the water and the sight of local wildlife, including bald eagles and white-tailed deer, which frequent the Missouri River corridor throughout the year.
Amenities & Park Features
The park provides a range of essential features designed for self-contained RV travelers. Many sites offer electric hookups with 30 and 50-amp service, accommodating various rig sizes. Because fishing is a primary draw, the park includes high-quality boat ramps and dedicated fish cleaning stations. While the facilities are more rustic than a luxury resort, they provide clean vault toilets, drinking water access, and well-maintained picnic areas that emphasize an authentic outdoor experience.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The main attraction is undoubtedly Lake Francis Case, where anglers pursue walleye, northern pike, and smallmouth bass. Boating and kayaking are popular ways to explore the hidden coves of the reservoir. For those looking to explore beyond the water, the historic town of Geddes offers a glimpse into local heritage. Additionally, the Randall Hills Golf Course is located nearby for travelers who want to enjoy a round of golf with stunning river views.
Who This Park Is Best For
North Wheeler Recreation Area is ideal for avid anglers and boaters who want to maximize their time on the water. It is a perfect fit for RVers who prefer a quiet, natural environment over commercialized campgrounds. Families looking for a simple, nature-focused retreat will appreciate the open spaces and scenic lakeshore access. If you are seeking a peaceful basecamp to enjoy the South Dakota outdoors at your own pace, this recreation area is an excellent choice.

Nice, primitive camp ground, John, the Camp Host is awesome. Good fishing advice and tips on where to go in Geddes for supply needs.

North Wheeler is a clean groomed campground. There are 2 different locations, each a stone throw from each other. The first campground (on the right immediately after entering the recreation area has 1 vault toilet, one water hydrant for 8 camp spots. This grounds is located right on the beach. It has electric hook ups at each site with 50 - 30 amp and two 110 electric plug ins. Little for shade. We stayed at the second site. First 5 sites are for tents. They share no water and one vault toilet. Just beyond the tent site are 12 back in pads. Pads are gravel lain. These all have 50 -30 amp with two 110 volt plug ins. There is one vault toilet shared among these. Toilet was clean while we were there. As in the first campsite there is only one water hydrant to share with all. Sites each have a fire pit. The sites are so close together that your neighbors burning a fire will be in your backyard, as your fire will be in your neighbor's back yard. Campsite sits down in a valley like setting. There is no cell service at the sites, if you travel up the hill you can get 1 or 2 bars on your phone. This location has a nice turn around at the end of the campgrounds. There is NO dump stations. This is also one of a handful of campgrounds in South Dakota that is first come first serve. There is a handicap driving trail that can get those whom qualify out into nature. A short drive further down the road is a boat dock and fish cleaning station. There is also a vault toilet. Cost runs $15.91 a night (as of this review December 2020). No generators are allowed to run. Pets are permissible as long as leashed and control over them maintained.

Awesome place to camp but I grew up out here 7% plus grade with switch backs in and out helps keep out the clowns. Too many Iowa people anymore there must not be any camp grounds over there. If you can't pull a camper on anything but pavement "And most of you cant" don't go down to wheeler. I have pulled many guys straight that have spun out on the wash boards with there pickups. No dump station no shower house just a outhouse and no water at the sights you have to fill your tank. Oh and if you like cell service this is not the place for you and if you don't have a dish no TV either.

Great place to put your boat into the lake. Campground with electric hookups for campers and some unimproved tent camping on the schedule there side of the bay. Cedar point I think is what that area is called. Requires South Dakota state parks permit or daily registration/park pass.
