NRA Whittington Center

Overview

Spanning over 33,000 acres of rugged New Mexico landscape, the NRA Whittington Center offers a unique destination for RV travelers who value wide-open spaces. This facility is far more than a typical campground; it is a premier shooting sports venue set against a backdrop of dramatic mesas and high-desert terrain. The park provides an expansive environment that feels remote and peaceful, making it an ideal choice for those who enjoy a wilderness experience without sacrificing basic comfort.

Location & Surroundings

Located just outside the historic town of Raton, New Mexico, the center sits within a stunning stretch of the Rocky Mountains. The landscape is characterized by rolling hills, juniper forests, and crisp high-altitude air. Because it is positioned along the I-25 corridor, it serves as a convenient stop for travelers moving through the southwest. The scenic mountain views provide a quiet, natural setting that defines the authentic experience of the American West.

Amenities & Park Features

The facility maintains several campground areas capable of accommodating a variety of RV sizes. Guests will find essential full hookup sites that provide water, sewer, and electricity, ensuring a comfortable stay regardless of the season. The grounds are thoughtfully integrated into the natural geography, offering a rustic feel. Visitors have access to clean shower facilities, laundry options, and well-maintained gravel pads, ensuring that the essential park infrastructure supports both short-term visits and longer, multi-day excursions.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

While the center itself is home to extensive shooting ranges and educational programs, the surrounding area is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors can explore the Capulin Volcano National Monument, a short drive away, which offers incredible views and unique geological history. The nearby town of Raton offers a glimpse into local history with its charming downtown architecture. Whether you prefer hiking local trails, bird watching, or exploring historical landmarks, the region surrounding the center provides plenty of diverse opportunities for daily adventure.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is perfectly suited for shooters, outdoor adventurers, and those seeking a quiet retreat away from the crowds of commercial parks. It is an excellent fit for big-rig owners who appreciate spacious, uncrowded sites. Travelers who value solitude and the rugged beauty of high-altitude landscapes will find the environment particularly rewarding. It is the ideal home base for those who prioritize a peaceful atmosphere and access to unique outdoor recreational activities in a stunning setting.

Pretty awesome place. My son had a great time shooting clays. Staff was super friendly and helpful. The museum was very interesting and the gift shop had a nice collection of souvenirs.

Beautiful location and views. Clean restrooms. It was cool to look out and see the deer wondering around our 5th Wheel. The mosquitoes were the only negative but the OFF kept them away.

We stopped to view the museum. World class gun collection. Outstanding displays! Very friendly and informative staff. Definitely a worthwhile stop south of Raton. We didn’t stay overnight but they said they have nice accommodations.

An incredible facility. Beautiful ranges, a wide variety of lodges and cabins – to include competitor dormitories. The roads and grounds are incredibly clean and well taken care of. I can’t believe I have not been here before to take advantage of the Whittington center. The staff was very polite and helpful.

We read about it being a great place to see birds, animals. We weren't going to target practice as we are traveling on vacation and just happened upon this great looking facility. we didn't know that you had to go inside and fill out computer paperwork first. Not a big deal and I totally get why just wanted to inform other non shooting visitors that you do have to do this.
