Ochoco/Walton Lake

Overview

Walton Lake Campground offers a tranquil retreat within the heart of the Ochoco National Forest, serving as one of the most popular recreation spots in Central Oregon. Located at an elevation of 5,000 feet, this park provides a lush, forested escape from the high desert heat found in the valleys below. The campground surrounds a scenic, spring-fed lake that reflects the towering ponderosa pines, creating a peaceful atmosphere for RV travelers seeking a true connection with nature. It is a primitive yet well-maintained destination that emphasizes the quiet beauty of the Pacific Northwest.

Location & Surroundings

Situated approximately 30 miles northeast of Prineville, the drive to the park takes you through winding canyon roads and scenic meadows. The Ochoco Mountains provide a unique landscape characterized by ancient volcanic plugs and dense evergreen forests. Because it is far removed from city lights, the area offers exceptional stargazing opportunities on clear nights. The surrounding terrain is a mix of rugged peaks and gentle slopes, offering a cool climate during the summer months that many visitors find refreshing compared to the arid plains.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a traditional forest service campground, meaning it is designed for dry camping without electricity or water hookups at the individual sites. The park features paved loops and parking pads that can accommodate many standard RV sizes and trailers. Key amenities include potable water hydrants and well-maintained vault toilets located throughout the loops. Each site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a fire ring for evening campfires. There is also a small boat ramp specifically for non-motorized watercraft, ensuring the lake remains quiet and calm.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw here, with the Walton Lake Shoreline Trail providing an easy, level path for hikers of all skill levels. Anglers frequently visit to catch rainbow trout, as the lake is regularly stocked throughout the season. Just a short drive away, you can access the Lookout Mountain Trail, which offers panoramic views of the Cascade Range. Wildlife viewing is another highlight, as visitors often spot elk, wild horses, and a variety of bird species including nuthatches and woodpeckers throughout the dense forest canopy.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for self-contained RVers who prioritize scenery and solitude over modern luxuries like Wi-Fi or sewer connections. It is a perfect fit for families wanting to introduce children to fishing, kayaking, and forest exploration in a safe environment. If you are a photographer or a birdwatcher looking for a scenic forest setting, Walton Lake is hard to beat. Those with smaller trailers or camper vans will find the maneuvering easy, though larger rigs are welcome in the more spacious designated sites.

A beautiful little lake. Camped a couple days here and loved it. Very quiet on the weekdays. Restrooms were very clean and Camp Hosts Tony and Karen were wonderful.

Went camping with my son and 4 yr old grandson for his first "Boys only" camping trip...We couldn't have picked a better spot! Clean campsites and well maintained vault toilets. The little lake is beautiful, fishing was great...the trail that circles the lake is kept up and there are rest spots with benches for those with limited mobility. We saw Bald Eagles, Osprey, Ducks and lots of other smaller critters...It was a great trip and well suited for kids. 10 out of 10.

The Walton Lake Campground was beautifully maintained. The Hosts - Karen & Tony Smith - were great. Very kind and hard working. The restrooms were clean and always stocked with toilet paper & air fresheners. The garbage cans throughout the campground were regularly emptied and the restrooms pumped out. The hosts were available if u needed them yet didn’t intrude. Very quiet and peaceful. Loved camping here.

Beautiful Campsite. Pit toilets that are cleaned regularly and there is a water spigot in the first campground can't say for the other side of the lake. Big sites with sturdy tables and fire pits. Great spot for fishing, not super big rainbow trout from the shore but many bites and lots of fish jumping. Bald eagles and lots of pretty flowers. Small lake that is pretty still, great paddleboarding. We did not reserve a spot, there were only a few open when we got there around 6pm so recomend getting there early or reserving online.

Very nice Campground, clean, quiet, stayed 3 nights. RV parking spots are paved, no electric, sewer, or dump station. There is vault toilets. Dogs must be leashed & picked up after. Camp sites have a picnic table & fire pits, with grills. Many sites have lake views, access is fairly easy. There is a trail around the lake, about 1 mile, it's fairly easy to walk. Some people rode bikes. The lake is very popular for fishing, I don't fish, just enjoyed walking the trail, the lake is beautiful. There is a day use area, as well as a small beach for kids to swim, but no playground. Reservations are advised for campsites, some sites are first come first serve. Camp hosts are great! Enjoyed the stay, will definitely camp there again 🙂👍
