Ochoco/Wildcat
Overview
Wildcat Campground offers a serene, rustic escape within the Ochoco National Forest near Prineville, Oregon. This secluded destination serves as a gateway to the Mill Creek Wilderness, providing a peaceful backdrop for those looking to disconnect. Unlike modern resorts, this park emphasizes a natural forest experience, where the sounds of the wind through the ponderosa pines and the flow of the nearby Ochoco Creek define the atmosphere.
Location & Surroundings
Nestled about 10 miles northeast of Prineville, the campground sits at an elevation that keeps it cooler than the high desert floor during the summer. The area is characterized by rugged rimrock canyons and dense stands of timber. It is situated adjacent to the Wildcat Trailhead, making it a prime spot for those who want immediate access to the backcountry. The landscape transitions from rolling hills to steep volcanic outcrops, offering diverse terrain for exploration.
Amenities & Park Features
As a Forest Service site, amenities are focused on the essentials for traditional camping. Visitors will find potable water available during the peak summer months and standard vault toilets. Each site is equipped with a heavy-duty picnic table and a fire ring for evening gatherings. While there are no electrical or water hookups for RVs, the sites are spaced well enough to provide a sense of privacy among the tall trees.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the Mill Creek Wilderness, where hikers can explore miles of pristine trails and see ancient volcanic plugs. Anglers often spend their afternoons at Ochoco Creek, which runs right by the campground, testing their luck for small trout. A short drive away, the Ochoco Reservoir provides opportunities for boating and larger-scale fishing. The nearby Stein's Pillar offers a stunning geological landmark for photographers looking to witness Central Oregon’s unique volcanic history.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for boondocking enthusiasts and self-contained RVers who prioritize nature over luxury amenities. It is a perfect fit for outdoor adventurers seeking a basecamp for hiking, birding, or exploring the Ochoco Mountains. Travelers who enjoy a quiet, off-the-beaten-path experience will find Wildcat to be a refreshing change from crowded private parks. It is best suited for smaller to medium-sized rigs due to the forest road access and site dimensions.

Nice overlook. I took a break there on a motorcycle trip and shed some layers and got something to eat and drink.

One of the best views in redmond! We stopped by on our way out of the redmond area and I'm so glad we did. Not only has an amazing view of the town but it's easily accessible and not too crowded early in the year

Clean area, nice views. If you have kids and pets you must be mindful this isn't the most child or pet friendly spot. No bathrooms. Lots of sage brush.
